I am playing on medium level and I am currently allied with the Italians. However, they seemed to be sending assassins against my best generals. Does anyone know what is the best way to break alliances without pissing off other factions? I have a number of alliances with my neighbours and do not want to start a war on two or three fronts.
Depends... There is no way to break a alliance without pissing Italy's allies off... however, if they like you better they will just become neutrals.
no real good way to break an alliance, but you could try sending little hordes of spies into italy's provinces to start rebellions. that'll distract em for a bit.
to retain allies...have big armies. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
Anyone else love the "Good News! You have the largest army! No one else can field so large armies!" message? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

The flipside of that message is: "Congratulations! You have the highest expense of all! No one else is losing money as fast as you are!"

I decided to attack the Italians faction once and for all. Come to think of it, I might just wipe out the papacy, as the pope has just asked a crusade against me. That will teach them!!!

marlboro, will taking over the papacy remove the pope from the game?
Must you exterminate the faction completely for him to be removed? Assasinations simply have him replaced, correct?
Without the pope, how does this affect population loyalty and religious levels? When I get excommunicated my loyalty usually drops pretty drastically.
Im getting sick of the dang pope, he's cramping my style.

I don't know, everytime I conquer Rome, the grame crashes to the desktop. I have sent a message to the Support desk.
Conqering the Papacy will only put the Pope out of business for a while-- he'll be back, and bigger, badder and popier than ever.
I tried to stifle the annoying Papal nag with military force-- the result was worse. Huge armies just magically appear in Rome. I could defeat them-- but it's annoying AND I had to fight the battles, if you auto-resolve you lose.
I don't know how long (if ever) it takes for this to stop happening...
It never stops. They keep attacking you with tons of royal knights and other troops.
i guess CA really wanted the pope to play a part...

The best way of breaking an alliance is to piss off the other guy so he attacks you first. Masses of assassination of their bes generals should do the trick. Just do what the Italians are doing.
The papist faction will indeed reappear every dozen years or so with armies of increasing size. Playing in normal, at least, they stopped growing bigger at around 2000 men. So if you're ready to park around 3000 unitst and a good general there yourself, you can hold them off every time. Still, I found this very distracting, especially as I find I need to get rid of the pope sooner or later every time I play the game and if I let him come back, I'm usually getting excommunicated again sooner than I would like. Of course this happens only when I try to take over all of Europe, but even though I play the 'glorious achievments' option, I've never even once won the game through those achievements so far :P

Don't you have shinobi[their european counterparts] anymore?
That way the Italians would just be wasting a lot of money on assasins while they're being killed by the shinobi [their european counterparts]...

Think about it :
"There is no alternative for death"-J van Baars,Book of lore.
I have been praying for some peace for years but I am constantly at war as the Byzantines, Early, Expert.
Two years ago I was at war with the Almohads, Germans, Sicilians (I've been at war with the Sicilians for almost 100 years. They won't make peace no matter how many times I've asked for a ceasfire), and Polish. I didn't start the damn wars and no matter how badly I beat them and how much I begged for peace, they wouldn't stop.
Finally, I wiped out the Polish and I've got the Germans down to one province and they still won't make peace. Meanwhile, the filthy Almohads, over 6,000 strong, have attacked me in Egypt and are now pushing into Asia Minor.
No one will help me and the Germans won't make peace even though they are down to one province.
More later...
Just take rome but don't take out the papacy. Bottle him up in the papal states with barely any income and let your King sit tight in Rome, that should keep down rebellions; that's where a true ruler should be in any event. Much easier then eliminating him and having to deal with him cropping up every few years.

The Germans are dead and now I have peace in northern Europe.
The Almohads have been defeated in Armenia and Rum and now I've pushed them into Sinai. But they are a tremendous money-making machine and they are creating loads of new units.
Meanwhile, my treasury is at -20,000 and I'm losing units far too fast.
more later...
