Ok, so I thought it might be interesting to post this odd occurence... I dunno, there's probably an explanation for this, but then again, I dunno. Here's what happened:

I'm playing as Baktria, attempting to re-create a new Hellenic-Persian Empire, the year is 235 BC, and I'm at war with the AS and the Ptolemies. My armies always consisted of mostly Thureophoroi/Thorakitai, Bodyguards(Hetaroi Kataphraktoi), and whatever native auxilia that I could muster.

The thing is, I've always been fighting against different types of phalangitai, but I've noticed over time that the AS and Ptolemies have been gradually training more and more spearmen or swordsmen to fight me in favour of their more usual phalangitai. As shown in the picture above, the Ptolemies completely abandoned their phalangitai in favour of spearmen and swordsmen, including mercenaries.

Now this is the crazy part. Did the Ptolies(remember, they're a stupid AI) train that army in order to better fight against my thureophoroi, or is this makeshift army simply a coincidence?

Nonetheless, it's quite exciting.

EDIT: the bottom army is mine, the top one is the Ptolies...

this is interesing as well,

Back in vanilla, 1.2, I attacked Rome and rampaged up and down the penisula against all 3 factions, they switched from hastati to increasingly more wardogs and their own light cav to counter my mainly light cav armies-- i assumed they had some kind of adaptation element to their ai as their armies changed over time

Maybe they're running out of towns they can recruit proper phalangites in.

I never even took a Ptolemaic city yet. Check the mini-map I posted, they still have all their home provinces...

@HasdrubalBarca
Yeah, I think I agree with you. It's neat, huh?

Thats what I thought, look at the map though, they should be able to recruit plenty.

On a second look thats is one pretty badass army you got yourself there, I cerinately would like to chalange it with a pure phalignite army.

lol, yeah... I conquered my current empire with those hard-core veterans. But, those guys are really good for outflanking phalangitai, especially the hetaroi kataphraktoi.

btw, my general is the son of the Royal Inheritor, so he'll be a Basileus one day...

All those Theurophoroi are mercs, looks like it was just a merc spam thing.

Only 4 are mercs, and come on, theres no need to bring us down to earth on one of the few times the RTW engine gives us something good, let us dream...

To bring you down to earth, here's a fact from my KH campaign:

In the beginning (2nd turn), i had 4 units in Athens, and a full Macedonian stack next to it (they combined armies). I also had my faction leader with 5 units (the crappy levies you start with) next to Korinthos. I guessed that Macedon would attack Athens with their mega-stack, so i besieged Korinthos in turn. However, when Macedon's turn came, they simply marched their stack far off north, without looking back :beam:
Now i have taken Korinthos and Chalkida and the Macedonian stack seems to have completely vanished, and they seem to have no interest in protecting their cities. Also, Pyrrhos seems to be happy just standing in the mountains for years (he hasn't moved from start).

I play on M/H, with BI.exe :egypt:

And I had such a exciting war against the Makedonians as the KH where they sent stack after stack and I was using my greek levies to defend against them and to my horror they sent a Pezheteroi (spelling?) army against me...and I didn´t even have proper hoplites :sweatdrop:

That was exciting, but then again I play on VH/M using money script so the A.I has more dough to play with.

Well, I'm still playing the same campaign... The Ptolies are starting to wear me down by attrition, and I only conquered 1 of their cities so far. Their armies consist mostly of Klerouch Galatians(forgot the name in greek), Thorakitai, various skirmishers and levies and so far, only 2 Elite Phalanxes, 1 Pezhetairoi, and 1 Klerouchai Phalangitai.
:beam:

I find it so cool, they basically stopped using phalanxes. And I have to admit, those Galatians are murderous barbarians. They break if I charge them from the rear with my bodyguards, but still... these are all costly battles...

Thought some people might find this interesting... I guess I'll just let the thread die out now, the "shock and awe" is basically over...
:wink2:

Btw, there's two more Klerouchai Galatoi in the Ptolie army, if scrolled down, but there's still 3 Phalangitai... I got two famous battles in two turns, something that never happened to me before. The Ptolies were stubborn about letting go of Antiochea and the sorrounding area. And yes, althought I'm winning the battles, I think I'm losing the war...

In my VH/H KH war i had a thriller vs that Makedonian stack. Put all but one one family member and unit in Athens. Athens got sacked in a great battle, but it turned out to be hollow victory for Makedonia, i mauled that stack and fought to the last man. Also i took Corinth and with a huge windfall (no more 800 per spartan bodyguard) i rebuild a stack with my last surviving general and after 2 years took back Athens.

The Ptolemaioi will always have tons of Galatians in their army in the middle/late games. The stats of those Galatians draw the AI in and they will make tons of them. However, since they are on L4(or was i only L3) of the MICs, it will take a while for them to start using them. They are available almost everywhere.

hmm i guess they are just afraid of me (it is said BI.exe makes them smarter :beam: ), so my reputation precedes me :laugh4:

BI.exe added a whole new dimension to my KH campaign. Carthage landed on Crete! Ptolomeys are hell bent on taking Rhodes. For the first time i am contemplating of having some sort of navy, so i can shuttle my "fire brigade" around Augean. I have also witnessed great battles between Romans and Carthagenians around Rome! (sea born attacks). In short try BI.exe if you have not.
