View Full Version : Creative Assembly Trying to mod formations
Hi,
I have modified the formation width and length spacing parameters for Spearmen from 60 to 30, because they look too loose formations even in close order, but I find that the result is an irregular formation, soldiers bunch to one side of the formation. I did that before in STW-MI succesfully, so probably there is another parameter in MTW that should be taken into account, could someone please help me?

You'd need to adjust the radius parameter. This defines the size of circle a man occupies. By default its 25, so any spacing less than 50 will result in the men constantly colliding with each other.
Many thanks longjohn2, could you please tell me what are the "scale" and "Samurai" parameters for? Do I have to take them into account?

I dont have any idea what the scale parameter does, but I have it on good authority that the Samurai parameter selects for "elite" troops. If peasants run, a "Samurai" unit is not hit with the morale penalty.
This is interesting! Will we be able to modify and customize formation settings for our games, even multiplayer, without it going out of sync or crashing?
That would REALLY create a cool ability for individual commanders' preferences and how they set up their troops and would truly allow us to be field unique army layouts.
I'm sure there's a limit to what can be changed, but even if we can change/edit formations, can they be used in multiplayer?

Hey longjohn...
I think it says that the Byzantine Infantry is Elite in battle, but the file shows it to be non-samurai.
Am I just wrong or is it a bug of some sort?
[EDIT]
Ok, they are not Elite, but they are Diciplined, which seems to be somewhere in the middle.
How does one determine if a unit is Diciplined or make it so?

Kravis Disciplined units have a number of advantages. Lower morale penalty when the general dies, less chance to go impetuous, and they're less worried by routing peasant types (anyone who's neither disciplined nor elite )
You can determine if a unit is disciplined by looking at the troop tips. It's inate to some units.
There's also a building ( military academy I think ) that makes all the units produced in that province disciplined. Unfortunately this isn't reflected in the unit descriptions currently.
Ariaman. Scale determines the size at which the sprites are drawn. You don't need to change it for what you want to do, but if you want to make a unit of pygmies, feel free.
Dionysos's description of the samurai flag is correct. The name's just a hold over from Shogun. It's now used to signofy an elite unit
I see that light cavalry has a lower height than knights, and what it looks like smaller horses, if I want to change a unit look from hvy to light cav it is enough to lower height or do I need to change something else with horses?

No just change the scale factor.
JRock, forgot to answer before.
You can't mod the the layout of the soldiers in the unit, and still play online with unmoded people. Changing your stats so you could fit more people in a smaller space would give you a big advantage.
You can however customise the historical battle formations, and the group formations. The layouts for these are all kept in plain text files in the formationData folder.
I'm not going to explain exactly how to edit these, as describing the whole system would take a lot of time. I'm sure some of you brght folks will work it out though. Any custom layouts you make should ( by which I mean it's never been tested ) work online.
Ahh... So Disciplined units have an uninate buff? I mean they practically have the same properties as an Elite unit, yet that is not obvious in the stats.
So if I mod a unit, how can I make it Disciplined?

See that little column in the stats that says DISCIPLINED for some of the units...?
ohh... ups!
