In theory: speeds up your game by making use of your sound hardware.

In practice, thanks to so many soundcards misreporting their capabilities: often slows your game down ;-/

See how your battle speed varies with it checked and unchecked.

Should give you better quality 3D sound too, but as Gil says, it depends a lot on your sound card.
