Unit Experience

Is there one gauranteed way of getting experience for troops. I mean, on a couple of occassions I've had units stand and watch a battle from a hill top, just observing, and they get one chevron. Why? Watch and Learn? And sometimes, units who engae in combat and kill loads of the opposition and lose few gain none, I have no idea.

What is the best way in a battle to get chevrons?

its seems pretty simple to me: kill lots of bad guys->get experience. if you're not getting experience, you're not killing hard enough!!
