Mh, I played MTW + mod some time ago and also was on this forum.
Most ppl. said that rome would be not as good as MTW.. I bought RTW
2 weeks ago and did some research and lastly decided to use the
RTR (total realism) mod. Well started camp as rome and must say,
this game is better than MTW. Esp. impressed by camp map and
battle scenes - had my first encounter with elephants... the men
fly through the air etc... cool.
Q1: I have 1,45 ghz + ati8500. I it worth to buy a better card fpr
this game ? I don´t know how the game would behave with larger
battles... maybe a 2nd hand 9700 or 9800 ?
Q2: How good is replayability of this game - or longer camp game fun? I noticed that I got bored with MTW cause later battles with too much troops und not so controllable as with smaller forces. Also mostly there would be a kind of stalemate of mine faction and another mighty AI controlled....

Hail Alpha, and welcome to R:TW! :ave:

Despite being released in 2004, this game can be very demanding with graphics turned to the max, and this is specially true with some mods.
Maybe with a 9700 or 9800 you could not max everything, but hey, every little step counts. So if you can find some cheap bargain, go for it.

Pretty much the same than in MTW. The game starts great but becomes a bit tedious, but maybe it's only me.
I started tons of campaigns and to this day I did not finish anyone, but I keep saying to myself that's only because I still have to mod or tweak something.
It's a great game anyways. I have been restarting campaigns for one year and a half and not only I did not deinstalled it, but I have installed it again in the same comp because some mods.

Maybe one of the best PC games released...
Don´t even tried MTW2 with old comp of mine :(
Mh, I wonder if such a better vid card would be okay fpr my comp
cause of weak cpu... ?

Yeah, you should not have any problem by upgrading to a 9700 or 9800, no matter your CPU, although I wouldn't expect an incredible boost in FPS.
Maybe just a good boost. :beam:

Heh, no matter? :dizzy2:
only if you have core2 @1.45, but they not exists. You need new cpu as well.
Personally I think CPU is a most important thing for RTW. I have gf-fx5200 (:sweatdrop:) and can set medium quality and play ok. But mine cpu (celeron/northwood, 128kb L2, maximum oc 150x20 = 3GHz) don't allows me to play even 6000 (40 cards) men...
My comp is utterly slow, but yours...~
I doubt that you have plenty of money, so 9800 is a good choice for you. It not support shader 3.0 as far as I know, but it's fast. Also pick up amd athlon processor compatible with your mobo, ensure you have at least 512mb ddr memory...
Make sure to overclock your system, if you don't know how, ask somebody. It gave 2nd breath to my PC.
Q2. I think replayability is high enough, though I have been playing this game for 3 years (it's my first TW). Now can't. Maybe one last campaign with mod not released yet, hope.
Long campaigns (150bce and further) always features 5-6 mighty factions, + some scum. You play kinda world war will them. Sometimes interest, sometimes not.
If you have low fps in big battles, try reduce unit-size in video options..

I've found the factions in RTW "feel" more varied than in MTW, which helps replayability, I do prefer short campaigns though - the long ones drag on for me.
Vanilla Rome's kept me occupied since April, I've yet to begin BI and Alexander properly...
Note: I'm running RTW on a GeForce 7300 LE 256Mb (Office PC ahoy!), 1Gb RAM, and Intel E6300 (1.8Ghz per Core I think?) all "High" settings, no AA. Could run it on "Very High" if I didn't mind it stuttering a bit in big battles.

Mad Hoplite and Shildmaiden:
Thanks for the opinions..

My PC isn´t SLOW, it is fast. For the age. I can o/c CPU (Celeron Tualatin) from 1,4 to 1,54. I can o/c my card only slight then it crashes, say from 275/275 to 290/285 (core/mem). Also I have fast CL2 Ram 512MB. Only drawback is this CPU has 100mhz FSB not 133 like P3 Tualatin. And ATI 8500 is one of the best cards ever produced :) Well a bit outdated meanwhile...:furious3:
I didn´t note any performance drop in the game so far... well I only fight small battles.... seems if I encounter the Germans then the size will be bigger... :2thumbsup:
I also like the feel the feel of RTW a bit more then MTW. I even read some books on Caesar, Roman Empire, Alexander, Hannibal etc.. Question is are there any movies from this periode which are recommended ?

BI is the best TW game ever, in my opinion. You don't get the MTW2 eyecandy, but who really needs this. As Shieldmaiden said, factions are more diverse in RTW with really unique styles of fighting. In MTW 2, European factions or islamic factions have basically the same units with some special units for some factions. But overall there's not much variety. MTW2 is still very bugged after some patches, and I find the battles to be totally broken and unplayable. It was absolutely no fun for me.:furious3:
After having tried to play MTW2 for some time, I returned to RTW because I can't play games that don't work. And I still enjoy it like I did the first day I had it.:2thumbsup:
I only have a TravelMate 2312LM_L :shame: I struggle with full stack vs full stack battles on small unit sizes. Can't wait to upgrade. (edit) I play on the lowest settings aswell. :shame:

My PC is the best for the build in components, not much more to reach in speed... besides upgrading. :)
