This is a Greek phalanx (?) trapped by ca. 150 roman men...
See above there are some slingers that haul stones at these
poor men, but it seems they don´t care. They don´t point the
shields in the direction or try to chase them down...

So maybe an AI bug.... I wonder what would a unit do in
reality trapped like this other than surrender...:embarassed:

Is there some Roman unit approaching from a different direction. Units seem to face the nearest enemy unit, without regard to ranged attacks. In reality, there was not much they could do against slingers. Against archers you can hide behind your shield and wait until they are depleted. But slingers practically never run out of ammo as they can always pick up small stones. The only effective countermeasure would be a cav charge. Or shooting back. Not without reasons slingers were the horror for ancient infantry heavy armies. The Balearic slingers were a terrible opponent for the Romans at first - and highly appreciated mercenaries later on.

Surrender? In most cases that would mean death as well, in some slavery (not sure what's worse). So why not continue the fight and take as many enemies as possible with you. War is not the right place for individualists, what counts is the survival of the people...

Well they were all killed charged from 3 sides, I lost 7 men.

What? You are telling me that after slingers deplete their ammo, it can resupply with stones during the battle? is this true? in which case? how does it work? does it have to be a rocky scen around?

I tend to use a lot of slingers in the early game, balearic and rhodian alike, they tend to kill the entire oposite army, so more ammo for these babies would mean a lot is this is true?

Hi RickFGS,

What? You are telling me that after slingers deplete their ammo, it can resupply with stones during the battle? is this true? in which case? how does it work? does it have to be a rocky scen around? As far as I know, slingers cannot replenish their supply during a battle - regardless of the scenery. It may be sensible if they could, although it could end up being rather imbalanced.

You are right. Slingers have finite ammo like anyone else. Nor is it that realistic that they should be able to resupply: you'd need to find stones of roughly the right size and shape. Most slingers used lead or clay bullets rather than stones as well.

Haha... Sorry for having caused such irritation. The question was, " What would a unit do in reality? ". So my post was referring to reality as well. In game, they cannot pick up ammo. I thought this was clear. :dizzy2:
