View Full Version : How does MTW calculate Missles?

Since the days of STW, I have never really understood the missile damage resolution model in the Total War series. No official source ever lists the statistics for units regarding their missile ability. Nor can I find hard info on range, reload times, attack power, etc. Is armor piercing, for instance, a variable ability, or is it just on or off (is all armor piercing the same)? Some melee values for certain troops show a variable armor piercing bonus (+2, etc.). Does this hold the same for missiles? How exactly does rain affect bow and crossbow fire? Does it reduce range, or accuracy, or killing power, or all three? And by how much? I've always been frustrated by my own lack of understanding of this factor of the game.

Anyone know where I can find this info? Thanks for any help.

It is hard to say really, but with the patch we have been promised the return of teh projectile file. There you can see power, range, accuracy of ranged weapons.

Thanks Kraxis, sounds good. Having the base values would be great, but of course is only half the answer. I remember my utter surprise when I discovered that increasing Honor of STW Sam Archers did not increase their accuracy at all, but only their melee effectiveness. Has this been changed for MTW? If not, why not? Why shouldn't more experienced missile troops improve with their primary weapons? And the lack of info on environmental effects on missile fire really impede your ability to make practical decisions about troop types. The interface and engine for the TW series has always had a transparency problem, perhaps it's time to clear the air a little.

Modders? CA? Anyone have answers regarding this? Anyone feel like I do?

My Sam Archers became MUCH better... At Honour 3-4 it was obvious.

And I have had several battles in MTW where my Valour 4-5 Trebizond Archers killed more than 150 each with their bows alone. I think the record for me is around 180 at the moment, but I guess my Longbowmen will change that. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

I am sure valour increases their accuracy - it would be silly otherwise. My archers never melee, not with that sharpened stick!

I am not sure about range though, or power for that matter. It shouldn't be increased since they don't actually become physically stronger, just more skilled.

It doesn't, only accuracy.

If you have never used archers in melee try the Trebz., they can tackle Horse Archers in close combat. That is very important to the Byzantines as the Turks tend to throw thousands of into battle.
And when they get some armour don't be too afraid to commit them to spears or militia. And they can defeat any other archer of their own level (jannisaries, ottomans, longbows and a few others can defeat them).
