View Full Version : Does anyone feel Carthage is always underpowered?

I was hoping EB would make it more challenging and their armies more powerful. But the AI ALWAYS under garrisons the capitol. They leave 3 units in the city. Its as if the AI believes just because there is an ocean separating North Africa and Italy, no one will bring a large army to invade. And also what happened to the navy? Its almost non-existent. I can easily cross the Mediterranean with no resistance. It makes it far too easy. Carthage is not aggressive enough.

I realize they do have a decent army, but all of it is in Spain. So if Carthage gets under sieged it would take too long to bring the armies back to where there needed the most.
Someone needs to write a script so that when Rome or any other faction invades Sicily, the garrisoning of CArthage should be kept a top priority, and that the AI should aggressively try to take back sicily.

...just a quick selection from the faction progress topic. So no, it seems like that Carthage is perfectly capable of fending for itself in some games, but not all the time; which is the intention I think.

And besides, there's only so much one can do to script faction behaviour, even were it desirable.

hes right though, they NEVER defednd Carthage itself.

Perhaps that's only really a problem against the human player though, since the AI probably wouldn't use ships to get nearby and there aren't any nearby land enemies. Perhaps a script of that kind would help that particular case.

Well, I've been playing as Roma, and since I conquered Carthage, they sent numerous stack to take the city back. I couldn't stop them from doing so even with force_diplomacy, so I had to kick them out from Africa :D

It's really the same thing. The AI doesn't like to use naval invasions, so it never thinks about naval invasions against itself either.

Yeah, cos playing as Carthage is rather easy.

Even if you don't ship troops to Spain, you can recruit perfectly viable units there quickly enough anyway!
Ditto for Sicily..

Geoffrey, I've never seen Epirus expand in Italy like that, looks interesting..

Unless you're playing BI. The AI LOVES naval invasions and will send STACK AFTER STACK after the SAME CITY and IT GET SO RIDICULOUS because the INVASION AI IGNORE DIPLOMACY AND THINGS BACK AT HOME.

The Greeks love trying to take back Tarantium, the Romans love attacking Thermon, Carthago loves attacking Sardin. But yeah, it never thinks about defending against a naval invasion. Carthage is not under powered, its just a little stupid. I mean, just look at its troop selection. Man for man, many of them are alot better than even the Polybian Legions.

carthago ai even dont care much about carthago city..most times its removes his capital more to east or even to spain.

naval invasions..yes with bi you have them without end (but ai cannot defend against them) greek v tarentum (or thes send a stack that go around over north italy^^) makedons v syrakuse, romans v thermon, sardinia and corsica, carthago and egypt v kreta, carthago v sardinien (or sometimes lilbao) and this without end.

As i dont care much about alliances or so (as the ai dont do too) and look only for trade rights or war i try to intercept the invasions at sea and kill them even if its a fleet of a ally and here is a small problem that mayby can be fixed?
Even if you have ships rdy carthago can bring troops from africa to sardinia, romans to ailalia and greeks to tarentum often in 1 turn so it helps not much to attack the fleet after that....
Is there any way that you fleet (that stays at the coast and has full moving points) can intercept and attack a invasion fleet in their movment phase? (and same for ai fleets that would help them a bit to defend v. naval invasions)
Mayby a script that moves the ships as its were the player and attack all enemy ships in range? the battles always auto calc so this should be no problem or?

Carthage has sent naval invasion after invasion to Sicliy and Sardinia in my campaign. It is quite frustrating, actually. But this is with BI, so that might be the difference.

Carthage invaded mainland Italy going for Rome earlier. Unluckily for them thohgh, they only sent two units and i had just made a full stack ready for an attack on sicily so they didn't last very long.

SO you installed BI before EB? Will it work if I install BI after EB?

Many of the Carth reform units seem to have lower stats than they should. The Elite African Infantry and Iberian Assault Infantry have very low armor compared to others with the same kit.

Also, reform units are not able to upgrade their weapons because of the way the reforms had to be implemented. I think that all reform units should have +1 to their attack to adjust for that, since by this late in the game pretty much all units are getting a blacksmith upgrade...

AI consider the sea as a safe border
If you want to fight, land your troops and wait.
The welcoming party will eventually come and greet you warmly :beam:

Yeah, I must agree with what sounds like a consensus opinion here...Sardinia appears to be too lightly defended, given the mining resources available on the island, and the relatively large stack in western Sicily is pretty easily dispatched. With the very light defenses in and around Kart-Hadast, it seems just too easy to get a foothold in northern Africa. Not that it's easy to snuff them out as a full faction, mind you, but I just don't fear them as a Romani leader like I do some of the other factions. Too bad, given their outstanding unit diversity.

If you just copy and paste the BI.exe into the same folder as the RTW.exe and then modify your game appropriately with either a user made mod or just appending -BI to your RTW.exe in the target line, your good. No need for anything else from BI.
