Alright there.

Basically this isn’t a problem with EB 1.0 as such, but the necessary instillations I need to make to be able to play the mod. I’ve recently bought a new PC which has a 64 bit Vista home thingy, the problem is after I’ve installed Rome Total War, I can’t play it as it comes up with this error message ‘Rome total war not found’. I installed the two patches (1.3 and 1.5) before installing EB 1.0 and I assumed it was a problem with EB, however, after uninstalling an re-installing RTW vanilla, I found I couldn’t play the even the vanilla version of the game at all. Is there a patch that allows me to play it on Vista so I can install these over patches and finally play EB?

Cheers for any help anybody can provide.

Rome TW not found? => Bad install. => Try again, it's the best you can do.

I have done fella, a good four times now and I get the same response. I can’t se it being the disks either, as it lets me install it, it just doesn’t let me open it up.

There is a list of things you can do to try to get a faulty installation to work in the thread called EB installation validation.

I’ve looked at your list and the one that seems appropriate is ‘Delete some interfering files that Vista hides in its bowels’. I am a layman when it comes to specific technical things and I really have no idea which files would be interfering with what.

Also I must stress that the problem I’ve got is that I can’t play RTW vanilla, despite being apparently able to install it fine. I only noticed I couldn’t play RTW Vanilla after I’d uninstalled RTW and EB 1 (which installed fine with no problems), as the game would not load up.

I’m curious to know if others have had problems installing RTW on 64 bit Vista and how I can fix to be able to play Vanilla (so I can check to see if patches 1.3 & 1.5 have installed properly) in order for me to play EB.

So really, anybody with Vista (or maybe even Direct X 10.0) who’s had the same problem or anybody who is aware of problems like this- please help!

Finally could the problem be that I'm using the 3 disc RTW from October 2004? Would purchasing the 'White' label RTW make it compatible with Vista 64?

If you read more carefully it says where these bowels are. Some of the people with Vista problems have a ATI X700 or NVidia Geforce 6600, do you happen to have either of these as well?

I don't think the disc means much. My old 3-disc RTW bought a couple of days after release works fine. In fact the RTW Gold seems to carry more problems getting EB to work than patching up from 1.0 does.

Exactly. Also the fact that you have got "Rome Total War not found" issues really does hint at a faulty install.. (I mean: it specifically says that the program you just installed simply isn't there where you installed it to...)

You could give your discs another look: perhaps some of them are damaged?

Perhaps you could simply try to search for the RomeTW.exe file and double-click on it to try to start the game (helps only when the shortcut is faulty). Perhaps an UAC issue? Then you have to use "run as administrator". I have disabled UAC (not a recommended setting, but it certainly helps avoid UAC issues). I can run the program without any problem on my Vista x64.

Double-clicking RomeTW.exe will launch vanilla, not EB. But of course to get the vanilla working it could be an idea.

Thanks for all your help, but I sorted the problem.

I’ve got an 8800 Ultra graphics card, so it wasn’t a problem with the graphics card and it also turns out that it wasn‘t a problem with the discs, but thanks for shooting me some advice anyway.

I’ll state what I did, on the remote chance anybody else has a similar problem. Basically what I think I did was install EB to the wrong folder and it therefore didn’t load. I uninstalled RTW and EB, but I don’t believe everything was fully removed in the Activision folder and this may have stopped my subsequent fresh installs from working properly. What I did was create a new directory called “Rome” where I installed RTW Vanilla to, the patches and then EB. I should point out that I had to change the destination of my EB install to the “Rome” directory, so folks with Vista really pay attention to where your installing EB!

As I said cheers for your help guys!

(and the new map, particularly the water, looks amazing!)
