Dumb question. But do units with descriptions as being armoured benefit more from armour upgrades as opposed to units described as lacking armour!

No, not directly.

It only give you an indication of their strengths and weaknesses.

You see he has a heavily armoured unit, so you deside to send an Armour Piercing unit at it.
