Crusades How do I control the Route

I am playing as the English in a GA game. I launched a Crusade from Mercia. I only have limited control of the route the Crusade is taking, is this right? I have seen computer Crusades go wandering all through the Catholic world before finally getting to their target. When I try to move I only have one province as an option. I have gone all across Europe and into the Balkans and was stopped cold by the Byzantines in Bulgaria. I wanted to go through Italy and then take ship to Palestine, it would not let me. Is this right

Yes, that is how it is supposed to be.
If you read the manual it states that Crusades can only go forward and closer to the target.

Somehow this is not the case for the AI.
I believed it was because we could just move our troops out of the way, while the AI can't (doesn't recognize the threat of a Crusade).
But then Gil or ECS began asking questions of this, and suddenly I was not sure it was intentional.
