View Full Version : Naval Bug?

(not sure if this has been mentioned before)

I have a large navy and recieve an awful lot of trade income,
BUT
In my current game the Italians are sinking my ships,
they have not been excommunicated, despite the fact this has been going on for several turns,
if i sink THEIR ships - i get excommunicated!

A little unfair methinks,
I have to suffer 10 years of them ravaging my navy, and making a mess of my economy before i can attack them again...

The ease with which the human controlled player gets excommunicated, while the AI just sails around sinking ships, and the pope doesn't excommunicate them,
leads me to understand why so many prefer to play as an orthodox or muslim faction.

and yes it IS the Italians, i've already sunk all the Almohad, Turk and Egyptian Shipping, and the only other navy is Byzantine - my ally.
(My ONLY ally after the Italians started sinking my shipping - that is annoying too...)

(I have not seen the single ship hopping from region to region in a game yet - perhaps that bug could be fixed by allowing the player to target a ship in a neighbouring sea region and let his warships follow the AI ship? in much the same way an agent will pursue it's target)

bar,

yup. i just posted a similar complaint in another thread about the excommunication thing being VERY one sided. i dont know if it's a bug, an oversight or intentional, but it is indeed VERY lopsided. with my game it was the danes attacking me in sweden and then i get warned for bringing in re-inforcements to protect my province against their invasion. yup. not right. needs fixing.

Hmm...I don't really think that either of these situations calls for a fix. Kraellin didn't give much detail on his situation, but it sounds like everything is working for barocca just fine. (I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that the Italians are much smaller than you.)Remember, he only roots for the little guy. The Italians get 10 years to rock your world free of charge, which leaves you with a hard choice...teach those bastards a lesson and deal with excommunication, or sit back and take it.

Is it lopsided? Well, yeah. You didn't expect the Pope to be fair, did you? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif It sounds like, in both cases, he's looking out for the weaker faction, which is exactly what he's supposed to do. I don't think this needs fixing at all. The Pope is supposed to be a royal pain in the butt! That's one of the disadvantages of being Catholic...

Yup, Little Raven is completely correct here. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

The Pope really gets on to your back when the nation you are fighting is down to 50% your size. Or something along those lines. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Kill that tight neck and your excommunication is history.

What I decided to do is put up with the MASSIVE loss of income from the italian fleets sailing willy nilly in the med,
they also inhibit resupply of beleagured garrisons - you see every province that went rebel I bribed early in the game when everyone was friendly,
Now I have some Isolated Provinces that I have teched up, and I have to wait for the ten years to expire - and go on one quick burst of anti-shipping, or a chance break in the blockade - the italian fleets are always moving, but they don't have enough to block all my ports.

The turks have all but eliminated Byzantine, I crushed the Almohad's back to one province,
and I took out the Egyptians - dealing with multiple Jihad's was getting on my nerves.

So every ten years I have my fleets in position and annihlate as much of the Italian shipping as i can before the pope jumps on me.

Having Taken the Holy land i have recovered a fair chunk of my income, now i have to wait ten years before i can clear the med again -

Perhaps a blockade should not be effective unless you have minimum 1/2 the size of the owners fleet?
Thus forcing the owning faction to increase the size of their fleet to maintain their income - this is a drain on resources both in maintenance and building, but if they can outnumber the blockage by better than 2 to 1 they keep their trade?

perhaps also reduce trade in such a province by 20%?

Logic being shipping is affected by blockades("pirates") but not eliminated

I can understand the little guy thing but when they declare war first and your simply defending yourself it doesn't make a lotta sense.
