View Full Version : How to sally?
I know you are all going to laugh at me for asking this but I have to ask anyway:
How do you sally when under siege?
I was playing a game as Saba and a Ptolemy town rebelled to me and gave me a big army, since it was out of the way, I made type 4 gov with local autonomy so I could leave it alone to focus on my main settlements.
Eventually Ptolemy attacked the town with an army of about 200 men, I could have beaten it easily with almost no loses but for some reason I was unable to sally out and attack them so the outcome was that I lost the town and the good army with it because I was unable to sally.

Select a unit in the town and right click on the army that's besieging you.

That's what I did but nothing happened.

Client rulers have 0 move points, making sallying impossible. There's a thread with fixes to downlaod for some 1.0 problems in the tech forum, and one for you to download gives the client ruler like 98% reduced movement or somesuch rather than 100% so you can at least sally. Unfortunately, I know not if it's save game compatible.
Are you kidding me? Type 4 Govs can't sally? What is the point of having them then? They are useless if they can't defend their settlement.

The problem became apparent only after it was released, I suppose. The modders didn't intend that consequence, hence the downloadable fix.

If for now you don't want to do the down load thingy, you can have a cheap unit somewhere safe near by the settlement and get it to attack the besieging army, thus the trapped army will sally in support. This way I have managed to save several settlements, just don't forget to untick the box so the AI doesn't take command, also the client governer won't get any credit for the defense.
It was partially addressed, but season, age, etc. can affect it. They still have use in provinces unlikely to see combat. What you can do is open the traits file, find client ruler, and change the penalty to a percentage that you agree with.

Even without the fix they can usually sally. Only when age, sickness, and season movement reductions pile on they can't sally.

well maybe if all else fails, you can just select a single unit card and get THEM to attack, since itll probably make everyone else do it as well?

I tried it and it didn't work, that governer of mine didn't want to be dragged into a fight outside of his stockade.

nope, everybody that is going to participate in combat has to have enough movement to attack, the client ruler, does not, meaning it wouldnt do anything like our good friend mr.Xehh experienced.
