View Full Version : Red Sea Hoplites
First off let me say thank you for giving one of my favorite factions my favorite unit type.
Are these Red Sea Hoplites historical though? I don't care if they are or not but a little info on them would be nice.
Essentially mercs settled by the Ptolemies on border cities, that have adopted to the rather different style of warfare of the region.

I would assume so, as the Greeks colonized Egypt, and later on, the Ptolemies would have had settlers in along the Red Sea.

They are one of my favorites too. Rest assured all research has been done.
How can I convince you? Do you want a papyrus number pointing that expeditions were both done to "acquire" elephants and all their paraphernalia.
Frank W. Walbank - The Hellenistic World has a very extensive emphasis on the Red sea Hellenes.
{OGIS 32}-
For the king Ptolemaios (Euergetes B') and queen Kleopatra, his wife, God Euergetes and their children, this is dedicated by Sotirichos, son of Ikadion from Gortyna, one of the chiefbodyguards who had been sent by Paotos, King's relative and general of Thebais to gather precious stones and overview the safety of the naval journey of those who whould transport incense and other cargo from Koptos mountain.
->Sotirchos is obiviously a captain from Crete and responsible for the sea transport from Berenike, Myos Ormos, White Limen in the Red sea up until the Nile, through the Koptos and safe conduct of trade in the red sea.
--For the sea part of the Hellenes controlling the Red sea.
and for those doing so inland (on the african part)
{OGIS 82}-
This is dedicated to the King Ptolemy and his queen Arsinoe, the Filopatores gods, Serapis and Isis, from Lichas, son of Pyrrhos, from Acarnania, sent as a General to hunt Elephants for the second time
Strabo 16,4-5
...(Filotera) town in Troglodutike, founded by Satyros, who had been sent to explore the Troglodutike land and hunt Elephants...
In all honesty, do you really think we would be making stuff up like that? If so, then I am sorry to say you have misunderestimated :laugh4: EB. There are people waiting with Kopis, gladius, rhomphaia, that indian swordaxe in hand waiting to chop people off in small particles if a unit is NOT historical.
Go ahead, enjoy using them. It's all good! I always believed that Ancient history is VERY interesting, exactly because you just need to dig up a bit furter down to find something SOO exciting, that people believe you must be obviously making it up.
So, interested in this unit I fired up the Recruitment Viewer to take a look at them.
They don't seem to be recruitable by Ptolomies...
Seems only Sabyn can get them?
Odd for mercs settled by the Ptolomies :inquisitive:
Also, only recruitable on the Arabia side.

I know for a fact that a Ptolemaioi skin has been made. Other stuff is for the 1.1
