why are they called Bosphorian when the Bosphorus is 500km further to the south, with no relation to the Scythian lands?

also, a quick internet search shows that the orgin of Bosphorus might be Greek for 'ox-strait' or Thracian for something glowing.

ahh, the generally accepted English spelling for that Crimean kingdom seems to be Bosporan. Clearly derived from the same Greek word however, meaning strait. I used to live in Istanbul, so...a little confused when I saw Bosphoran troops coming from Scythia. I knew about the later use of Bosporan(Crimean one) troops by the Kiev-Rus, but was not aware that the same people were around in ancient times. Good stuff.

There is a so called "Thracian Bosporus" which is the one at Byzantion and the "Cimmerian Bosporus" which is the Strait of Kertch.

Even if the correct transliteration would be Bosphoran

hmmm it should actually be Bosporan without h because the greek word is written with Π (pi) not with Φ (phi)...

For a generally accepted spelling, I sure have never seen Bosporan as a spelling until it was posted on this thread. I've always known it as Bosphorus.

Thanks a lot, but...
Seriously guys, don't! :dizzy2:

-we 're all friends here,

I pride myself not in being correct all the time, but in fixing what I did wrong.

Let me look into this and I will start a thread later as to why it should be Bosporan or Bosphoran.

I fear that without meaning to, I have helped a "simple mistake" keep on living, much like the "hoplon" shield, which never existed. (It is "aspis" shield, "hoplon"=weapon(generic name for any weapon)

Innit like a "one size fits all" description for all tools of war, including weapons, shields and perhaps even armor? That's the quarterpounder explanation I heard anyhow :idea2:

You already explained it in the AtB thread, I think.

would be interesting. i see no reason to use a "ph" although some, like english and french speakers, use it...

the original surely doesn't.
