....when you get to build cavalry units in all your castles anyway!?
*mutter mutter* larger recruitment pool *mumble incoherently* nah, ya got me
(welcome to the org btw!)
You get them earlier. Considering how powerfull cavalry in the unmodded game is that gives you quite the edge.

Playing as Sicily where you get Norman Knights straight from the castle, I am not building stables at all.
Norman knights are so good that they are only 1 point below the top level knights available (of one of the orders) so I am sticking to them during the entire game. Right now they are doing very well against the Mongols.
I build stables because when i need fast moving army with France, i don´t have time building them in all castles, when i can get them closer and faster from single castle with high level stables.

Some factions like the Moors have NO USE AT ALL for stables. But for Lancers and Gothic Knights you're gonna have to build one anyways.

yea, i just prefer to have a massive table of knights at my castle, ready to be drawn up for battle at moments notice. but yes, the stables are usually not on the priority list.

So theres somewhere for your horsies to live silly!
Saves leaving them in your kitchen or sleeping on the foot of your bed. Ouch!

On a side note the stables grant a chance of giving your general the "stablemaster"...which is +1 cavalry command or something along that line.
Some factions have no use for stables at all (like Sicily), some others like Byzantines have to build the highest level of castle stables to get their best cavs (catapracts). So, it depends. IMO most christian factions can do pretty well without stables.
Stables aren´t in my priority list either, but if i don´t have much troops that need better armor, i choose stables over blacksmith.
Of course you could use this lame exploit that you train up like 12 cavalry and then disband them all, they add to training queue but you won´t get any more until it´s under the max limit again. It´s expensive and takes lot time, so more reasons to build stables.

is that really an exploit?
you pay for their recruitment twice, plus the same upkeep for any time they're in active duty
I don't use it myself but I can see some sense in it, you could see it as having army reserves, ready to be called up (and take refresher training) when they're needed.

I just had personal experience with this. It sucks when your horsies don't breed fast enough.

What's the point of that exploit? What does it do? 'fraid I'm not quite getting it...:embarassed:

Early in the game, building the stables is on the bottom of my to-do list ~D. I rather concentrate on building blacksmiths, in order to be able to upgrade my spear militia with heavy mail, which actually makes them a decent unit.

it's not really an exploit, because it isn't at all cost effective
what you to do is train up loads of one particular type of units, all in different places
then you move them all into the region of your choice (you must also be able to train them there) and disband them
they will be added to the recruitment pool there, allowing you at a later time to raise a large stack of them in double-quick time
you pay for their recruitment twice, but you save on upkeep while they're "parked" in the recruitment pool
I see... Wasn't even aware of that, thanks!
i've found myself using this sort-of-exploit-cos-the-ai-doesnt-do-it mostly for storing elite unites at the front line in preparation for "the big push" e.g. storing janissary archers and qupulukuku (paloma!) before the mongols arrive. it IS expensive though.
Does anyone have a llink to the thread in which I posted screenshots how to do it ? I don't have it anymore. Anyway does it still work in 1.3 ? thought it did'nt. Never used it except for one campaign where I wanted to own the British Isles & Ireland, as Scotland, and nothing else.
