I decided to start this story because during my Venetian campaign I came across the character Balsamo, a member of the royal family. He had a large army stationed in Northern Italy. When the Pope excommunicated Sicily I took a chance and requested a crusade against the Sicilian city of Naples. The Pope accepted and I decided Balsamo was the man to go on the crusade. As soon as I pressed the "Join the Crusade" button, suddenly he had Francis of Assisi in his retinue. His piety soon increased on the journey south. After a successful crusade, Balsamo was given the title Balsamo the Crusader. After this another one of my enemies, the Milanese, were also excommunicated. Balsamo had the largest Venetian army in Italy so I had him march north. on his way there he was ambusher by a huge Milanese army. Outnumbered and unable to retreat Balsamo had to stand and fight. Balsamo had no time to organize his troops, the Milanese had already attacked. After a huge battle many Milanese and Venetians had been killed. Balsamo and his few remaining troops were all tired, wounded, and ready to surrender. Still Balsamo convinced them to make one final charge into the enemy. Bravely leading the charge Balsamo took down many Milanese before finally being taken down himself.

Soon after these events happened, a message was sent to the pope about a knight who was extremely pious and brave. To be considered for sainthood all he needed was one miracle. That same day a wounded Venetian knight arrived in Rome. He said he had witnessed a miracle that would surely make Balsamo a saint. He was brought to the Pope immediately. The men who brought him there said they had heard a truly amazing tale

On a technical note, you have to cause two miracles to become a saint.
