is there a way to stop the automatic combination of partially depleted units? is this part of a the eb script or is it part of the rtw engine?

There is an option somewhere, IDK really know where, though.

Have a look though the options in the main and game menus.

If you don't find anything, try looking through prefrences.txt

It used to be an option in the preferences.txt but its not there in the RTW engine.
I find that the game only very rarely does an auto-merge & then only when you've had say one unit lose only 20 guys & another of the same type cut down to 2-3 men.
In that sort of situation its entirely logical for them to be merged.

in my case whenever the numbers are below 35 they start merging and thts tough cuz in the earlier games i use a diverse selection of units but once the marian reforms kick in, i only use the 10 unit legion and it gets a bit furstrating

The game automatically merges very depleted units. I'm pretty sure that this is hardcoded and cannot be changed.

Some mods have a script that will automerge all units, but EB does not.

.
I always merge manually, dropping the less experienced/upgraded ones over the more. I try having two units of a sort in order to merge the depleted and retrain or disband the remainder.

I've never seen units auto-merge. In fact, just the other day, I was wishing there was a way to just have them auto-merge after a battle!

Select your army which needs the units to merge; press the M key, and the army will merge according to an inbuilt algorithm the RTW devs created. (Which means it will sometimes not do anything at all (if units hardly have suffered any losses) and it will try to keep the experience levels the same...)

I also have never seen it happen. I kinda whish it would though, at least for the AI.

Cut down on thoose ridiculous full stacks it produces that have less than 200 men in them on huge...

To clarify my earlier post, the STW/MTW engine had a quite aggressive auto-merge enabled by default.
In the preferences.txt (?) you could completely disable the auto-merge. (though for the life of me I can't seem to find the file right now :dizzy2: )

I think the AI is able to merge units. Sometimes it does not, but most of the times those stacks with 100 men in 10 units are in fact "armies" of 10 different kind of units. On the other hand, I see a lot of full size units of the AI factions that have notable experince; so must have been fought and beeing merged.

I had an auto merge happen not long ago. In a battle one of my 2 Pantodapoi Phalangitai units were cut to ribbons and fled off the battlefield. They were down to just a handful of guys. After the battle, they had vanished. After a quick look, I found that they had been merged with the other unit.
