In the middle of my Byzantine campaign holding my own in the South East. The Turks had been eliminated early doors and the Almohads whooped by the Spanish. Between myself and the Spanish we eliminated the Egyptians and the HRE had most of Western Europe with the Poles and Novgorod sharing the rest..

Things were going along nicely with the Spanish now on my doorstep fighting to a stalemate with my forces on our border provinces in the Middle East while my Northern forces were making small in-roads into the HRE.

Then the Mongols arrived....

Initially they took Khazar from my most loyal allies the Novgorod but then they started harassing my forces in Georgia who happened to be by a good runner. I sent my King to deal with them and that's when my game took a nasty turns of events.

He unfotunately died bravely on the battlefield fighting the very nasty MHC and in doing so my solid empire spiralled into Civil War. Oooops http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Now this was nasty. My empire was split in two with me choosing to side with the Loyalists because they had the bigger army and better Generals. However, it was one of the rebel generals that occupied my prized capital, Constantinople!! The army there was made up of Varangian guard and Pronoiai Allagion, arrrgrhhh! Nevertheless it got worse.... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

I had two other very similarly tough armies of mine in Milan and Burgundy consisting of my prized troops. I hadn't even contemplated what i was going to do with these yet since the recent turns of events had resulted in them both being cut of from my empire... Then, all of a sudden i was informed that i had been attacked by the HRE in Milan! Ok they were beside me and the numbers were in my favour, so i thought fine, no problem....

On the battlefield i found to my utter amazement that they consisted of one of my old armies, probably one of the newly formed rebel Byzantines bribed by the HRE!! I never imagined being the Byzantines and facing HRE "Byzantine" troops and Pronoiai Allagion and Varangian Guard at that! Needless to say i was fooked. And to cop it all off, the Egyptians just re-emerged in Spain's border provicnes to mine! My God, what is going ot happen now i dunno, lets just hope they go south and have a go at the Spannish.... if they come North for me i might just be doomed.

Anyway, fantastic stuff, and it was a pleasant, albeit shocking surprise to find myself fighting my old general with super elite army under another faction... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Hat's off to CA! Great surprises are always a treat. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

hehehe, doc.

sounds like one of my earlier games when i was playing the english. i had my king out front, capturing and raiding and defending when he all of a sudden gets killed. the country erupts in civil war, i too picked the loyalists and regained most of what was contended and go, 'ok, that wasnt too bad', but now i'm a bit weaker and the HRE are attacking my homelands. my new king is cut off from the homelands and my loyalty ratings are suffering badly from this. boom! another civil war!. this time i just barely manage to put down the rebellions, but the germans are now wreaking hell with wessex and wales! not good. i manage to cut off the german advance and contain it when i get yet another civil war! lol. by now i'm barely alive, split all over the place, rebel factions in almost every province and the germans are still knocking at my front door with wessex being in ruins. i finally had to resign. even if i managed to put all the rebellions down, drive the germans back and stabilize the country again, it was just too late in the game to be able to rebuild and win.

the king's influence is supremely important. he can die of old age or a disease and this seems doesnt seem to be too hard on the loyalty ratings. with plenty of heirs to take over, the populace more or less expects this and it's a relatively smooth succession. but, if your king is far from home and dies a sudden, violent death, you seem to get a double whammy effect on loyalty and a rather large squabble takes place for who is going to take over.

and yeah, i like it too :) this aint yer daddy's total war ;)

Right there with you Doc...instead of going out on a conquering binge, I set my Byzantines to de-moblize, trying to make alliances and increase trade.

Worked for about 20 years, then I guess the AI got bored and decided to rile me a bit, by having my supposed allies asassinate a few of my royals - http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif it figured right: I spent ALL that money saved to tech/arm up and launch retaliatory attacks throughout Europe, taking all but the Italian peninsula and Switzerland, one province at a time.

I finally took a deep breath, thought about it and LAUGHED MY ASS OFF! This little group of 0's and 1's had gotten me to feel personally offended, vengeful, and bloody brutal in retribution for a make-believe insult. ME! Who once marched in anti-war protests.

What a rush...thanks CA, and thanks Doc for the chance to post this.

Kudos to you Doc for not reloading to an ealier version and trying to deal with it.

My Emperor is staying safely tucked away in
Constantinople, not that i would let that drunken inbred command an Imperial army.

hehehe, yes, kukri, i'll be needing a new keyboard pretty soon myself... too much pounding on the keys in frustration or anger over this bloody campaign ;)

just wait till the AI pulls the crusade route bug on your HUGE army and reduces it to scrap within 3 or 4 turns ;) then attacks your province and takes it away. lol.

well my most daunting moment was when i had 90% of my armies in the east after conquering europre when at 60% conquest everyone decideds to rebel or reappear... i had to train up about 100000 guys across my empire to deal with the bastards

A safe bet is once every 10-20 years do a massive loyalty check on all your generals. Relocate the good loyal generals to key provinces and simply disband the crappy generals.

This works for the most part. And get rid of the low loyalty generals very quickly, I have a feeling that the troops they command get less loyalty as well.

And why does everyone pick on my HRE, it's just not fair. Well they'll understand my vision when they get to think about it in my copper mines. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
