crash on dialoge box

I have an orginonal copy of Shogun totalwar just the standard edition but i am having major probelms playing it. it seems to crash on me as soon as there is a dialoge box and i have to reboot windows.
On reading some of the posts i think this is a sound or codec issue but i cant seem to see what the solution is. is there a specific codec i need to install?
any help would appreciated.

i have been trying out a few different clans to see if i can pin point the problem.
I i go shimazu everything seems fine untill winter 1530 then when i hit turn everyone makes there moves then it just crashes i think this is due to the harvest roport crashing but im not sure.

if i go the usegi clan on the first turn i move men from Sado to Nato to take the empty province. when i hit turn a box appears that says i have conquered the province but as soon as i click ok the game freezes.

Did you patch the game? IIRC the harvest ctd bug disappeared after the first patch - at least it did for me anyway... but that was a long time ago now.
