View Full Version : Strange CTD issue

I have some peculiar CTD issue for MTWI...and it's been fine for a year and a quarter since I installed it last. It wasn't ever there before, not even when my brother upgraded the drivers for Half Life 2 Episode 2 and Portal on October 10th (there was a slow down loading the battlemap and campaign map up, but that wasn't a bother). Now it is there, and I have the necessary resolution CTD solution in place. No other solutions have been necessary since then, and they weren't needed before either. Nothing else has been changed. I even uninstalled and reinstalled, then reinstalled XL 3.0. Unless it's the latter, in which case I've played it for several weeks...

The only other time I had such a problem was when the computer needed rebooting...

Unless, of course, the DVD is damaged in any way. I mean, it looks like there's a smudge on the underside...that might be it. Nothing else I can think of, unless the computer really does need rebooting, like I said. It's sad, too, because I looked forward to playing as Castile-Leon on GA in XL 3.0...or as anyone, for that matter. Looks like I can't do it at the moment.

Any suggestions? I've only ever needed the one CTD solution...*touch wood*. And this current problem only started after I played a Quick Battle while XL 3.0 was installed (was the Italians...but they had the Venetian flag). Yet, that doesn't make sense because I selected a Quick Battle once before with the mod installed, or it's previous version, and never had any problems...

Because it's my bro's computer, rebooting it myself might not be wise...I'd like to be alive to play the game when all this CTD problem is sorted out. And if that doesn't solve the issue...it could be the DVD. If that isn't it...then I don't know what the heck it is, because I have NEVER had any problems before now like this...and it's making me angry. A game stops working properly for NO reason. The usual suspects of the CTD issues people have faced do NOT apply in my case, and the ONLY one which might has had a solution in place for over a year and a quarter without incidence. I'm wondering if the computer isn't just screwing with me and playing some ludicrous game with me...a game has stopped working with practically very little evidence for doing so, and has never had such a problem in the past...:wall:

I'd hang out on M2TW, but I just don't like that game. LOL. I get angry everytime I try to play it. Within moments, I find something I don't like. That's why I'm going to be uninstalling it, because I just can't get into it, no matter what...

But M1TW? My precioussssssssssssssss? Nos! They mustn'ts takes it, they mustn'ts! M1TW be safe on this computer...be safes! :furious3:

Kaidonni,

Unfortunately your post tells me nothing about the problem and as such I am unable to provide any advice. I know that you have a CTD and that's about it. When does the CTD occur? What exactly are you doing when it occurs?

Have you tried a clean install of MTW/VI and tested in Vanilla before installing any mods?

Did you read the sticky thread for MTW CTDs in the apothecary?

Can you post your system specs, especially OS version and graphics card.

I've uninstalled the game permanently now, and am proceeding to dispose of it.

That said, NONE of the other CTD solutions would be of any use. I've always used the resolution solution, keeping campaign map at 800x600 and the battle map at 1024x768. Upgrading the drivers didn't do any harm to the running of the game, except slowing down the loading. The resolution solution has worked since August 2006, and the upgraded drivers were no problem, either, to my surprise (and joy).

It reinstalled fine, also. Quickly tried vanilla...nothing strange. But then trying a mod that had worked for several weeks...redownloaded XL 3.0, and it started again. But it's rather...irregular. On Saturday, it seemed to only be on GA, didn't happen on Domination. But Armenia, a faction I previously played on GA, crashed today on GA. Made no sense. Worked fine the previous weekend. Always on the campaign map - sometimes immediately, sometimes a delay.

It always crashed moments after loading the campaign map with my particular CTD issue. Tried a custom battle, seemed fine.

This only started Saturday. Maybe the computer needed rebooting, but I'm not waiting for my brother to get around to doing that. Better now to consign the game to the bin. I ain't reinstalling again, or waiting for him, or risking damaging his computer by rebooting.

If the DVD is damaged, making a backup is pointless because the files would probably be corrupted or something anyway.

Again, no point looking at the other CTD solutions because this issue started way beyond the point the other CTD issues reported due to newer drivers, etc, would have struck. The game stopped working for no reason... Literally nothing has changed in over a year, except the drivers, and they didn't cause problems either. So, I'll be off...the end of Total War for me...

EDIT: That all said...

The default monitor is on HIGHTECH RADEON 9600XT (I take it those are the video drivers). Windows XP Professional, Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519 : Service Pack 2).

But, like I said...since this only started Saturday, and there were NO changes at all in the last year and a quarter that would've done this, not even upgrading the drivers...either the computer needed rebooting, in which case I have no idea if it was (knowing my brother it wasn't, and I'll have to mither and start a row to get something that simple done)...or I'm permanently screwed because he was supposed to make a backup just in case anything happened to the DVD...and if something has happened to it, it's no good now to make a backup. I uninstalled anyway, and reinstalling will be a pain, and a waste of time, just to find out the fact that this game is utterly screwed and I'll never get to play it again because I didn't have the guts to start a row about making a backup (that's the only way my brother does anything...by mithering him then starting a row). As you can see, I'm not very happy about a game stopping working for NOOOOOO reason. It's totally random.

EDIT 2: Rebooted it myself. Seems fine unmodded now. After reinstalling and rebooting. But, new problem...all of the internet bookmarks have literally VANISHED. I was gonna come here, and say what I did to try to fix any issues with the game, and...this is new, definitely. In all the times I have rebooted, the bookmarks for the internet have NEVER been wiped. Great...just great...

You need to downgrade those drivers to get trouble free operation, otherwise you will continually get unpredictable random crashes. Try the Catalyst 5.7 drivers and if you still have problems go for version 4.8 which IMHO are the best for MTW and a 9xxx series card.

If your bookmarks have gone it's possibly because you're logged in as a different user. Are you talking about IE?

Mozilla...heh...I solve one problem, then, well...is it April 1st? :inquisitive:

Oh, wait...I'm using one of those thingamajigs...computers! That's what they are. :laugh4:

Oh, and those drivers were just fine. I have no idea if my bro had rebooted, probably not (knowing him...I hadn't mithered him much yet...LOL). I'd played turns and turns of an Armenian campaign, played part of a Hungarian campaign...been between the campaign map and battle map, and between the campaign map and menu. All since October 10th. And just fine. Seems like it would have happened earlier if it were the drivers.

This CTD problem I'd had was far too regular and too recent to be the drivers. It's like...it just decided to...start causing a ruckus from out of nowhere on Saturday. Where I would have no issues at all before, every single time I loaded the campaign map, moments later, it'd CTD...up until today, when I reinstalled and rebooted. But I haven't installed any mods yet...but I wouldn't see why that'd be a problem, because I'd been playing XL 3.0 with and without those newer drivers for weeks. Not for long without, mainly with.

Hopefully it's resolved *touch wood*...

Sorry about all the earlier drama...I needed a little rant...lol.
