I feel embarrassed to ask this since I have been playing RTW for so long, but what exactly does influence do for family members? For that matter what does it do for all characters?

influence gives a happines bonus when governing cities and determines the size of the bodyguard (together with personal security)

Ahh that makes sense, thank you. Doesn't it also have an effect on diplomatic negotiations?

At least for diplomats, this is true. If FMs with high influence have kinda bonus when negotiating, I can't answer you defenitely, but I'd guess it has.

Influence is evil, because once your super great governor dies the city revolts :laugh4:

Especially when the faction leader dies in a huge city with only one unit of levies helping him governing. I often forget to get a new one to this city, or someone with less influence. So..usually 1 turn of riot...or maybe they are just mourning in a very...extrovert way that includes killing others and destroying buildings. :laugh4:

I saw an AI controlled Persepolis doing something like this...the governor died and from over 32000 population it stabilezed some years after at 19000 with 2 revolts in the middle :laugh4:

By the Gods, thank you! I'd always wondered what determined the size of the bodyguard (I assumed age, but then my insane Faction Leader turned 50 and somewhat dispelled the myth)

It should also be noted that diplomats can only bribe characters when their Influence is higher than their target's.
