First, I´d like to say thanks to everyone who contributed in the making of this mod and to congratulate them all for the excellent work. I´ve found that the mod is much better and more fun than the original rtw. I specially like the variety of units and building, the fact its more historically accurate (gotta love the loading screens) and the new economy which prevents you from spamming humongous numbers of armies.

Now, to the questions...

1. Autocalc. Why does autocalc gives such lousy results? As an example I´ll use one of my latest battles with the romani against the aedui:

~2300 romani (mostly principes backed up by a few accensi) against ~2300 aedui (mostly regular spearmen, no "elite" units). I controlled the battle and simply held my line. Result: clear victory with ~200 romani losses and ~1100 aedui losses.
On the next turn, the remains of the aedui army stroke again the same army as mine: ~2100 romani against ~1200 aedui. Autocalc. Result: clear defeat, with ~1400 romani losses to 400-500 aedui losses.

I don´t get it. I don´t want the AI controlling my army to flank or charge on the enemy´s rear, I just need it to hold a line, but I tend to get absolutely shameful defeats even when my army is vastly superior. On city sieges, the situation is even worse: any 200 levy anythig can cost me 400 well trained man. So, what´s the problem? Is it the fact that I rarely use cavalry and the AI can´t control an army without it, making me getting flanked almost every battle? How does the AI calculates battle when I hit autocalc?


2. Sturdy enemies. When I´m fighting some units, specially againt greek hoplites, it seems to take forever to kill them even if I outnumber them 5:1 and completely surround it with good quality units (usually principes). I understand their formation is one of the most effective when defending from frontal attacks, but shouldn´t them die in a reasonable amount of time when surrounded?


3. Lusotannan cities. As I play with the romans, I´ve having problems conquering the westernmost cities from Lusotanna. Everytime I conquer them, in just 2 turns they go into revolt and bam: a new enemy full-stack. I understand the point of the creation of these stacks, but seeing 2 stacks of roughly 2000 men appearing from the rebellion of a city with less that 1k habitants just seems weird. How can I hold on to these settlements?



Sorry for the length of the post, but didn´t want to create lots of small threads for each and every doubt I had. I´d appreciate if you can help me with any of these questions :)

At what level of campaign difficulty are you playing? VH? Then no wonder about your results, as autocalculation, IIRC, uses the campaign level for boni/mali.

4. historically, the lusitannan and other modern-day Spanish tribes were the hardest to pacify for the romans. the only way the romans were able to defeat them was to mas slaughter all the adult men.
and you have to remember that number is the number living in the city, not the province. most people were farmers so the numbers seem to work.

Very well remembered, iwwtf_az, I did not think about the people who lives in the region but not in the city! Do you have any suggestion for how I could "pacify" them? Already enslaved and exterminated and still nothing...

The auto-calc is notoriously bugged and cannot be fixed; the problem is consistent to vanilla.

If you get really frustrated, you can try the auto_win command. Hit the tilde key to bring up the console then type "auto_win X" where X is attacker or defender (whoever you want to win). Remember that when sallying, though, the sallying force is the attacker, not the defender.

Also, the results of this cheat are, in my opinion, more frustrating than the bugged auto-calc because the results are absurd. A group of 80 peltasts can defeat an army of over 1,500 with next to no casualties. I tend to just avoid auto-calc, even if it takes more time.

Easiest solution is to do every battle by your self or use the Auto_win cheat.. AI got a wierd fetish of killing them selves.
