I uninstalled and reinstalled everything three times without success. Everything is going into the same folder C:\documents\my games\Rome - Total War. EB 1.2 works fine, but the BI installer keeps getting the same problem "Please Select an Item from the List"

I ran the validation script and it showed a lot of stuff that makes little sense to me but I suppose means there's something wrong somewhere, but I can't figure it out. Shouldn't this theoretically work if BI 1.2 works fine and its installed into the same Rome directory as everything else? If I can't figure it out, is there an easy way to just use BI.exe without the installer? I really want challenging AI and naval invasions to keep things spicy.

Can you post your validation script results either here or in the bug forum?

Also, my installer *is* the easy way--otherwise you have to muck around and copy a bunch of files... and you won't get night battles or other BI features, just the AI. Try running my installer with just the "main" checkbox installed, that's the bare minimum to get EB to work with BI.

The validation script is insanely long. I think I attached a .rar of it here. :sweatdrop:

hi Ferromancer congratulation for your mod it is the best.
i have tested this mod with

mod Darth Stalin's Legionary Model
City Mod
Force Diplomacy Minimod
and it is compatible whit savegames
and i changed export_descr_unit because all the units tha can do shield wall are too much separated
in their formation and i returned them how they was in EB vanilla and they get can do shield wall.
i maked this changes in the course of my campaing and they are compatible.
thank you very much Ferromancer.:2thumbsup::2thumbsup::2thumbsup:

Geez, that validation *was* long, but it seems to check out okay.

Try doing a search for "Please select an item from the list" in the forums, that might give some ideas as to what is wrong.

so you cant use minimods if there installed after bi is installed is that correct.

I remember when i 'd play BI that in the battle description(where it lists the forces of each factions) there would be the attempt night attack box.The box would be there even if the caracter attacking did not have the trait for night attacks. In EB 4 BI i don't ever get the box, i get all the other stuff eg shield wall but not this. is there a reason? EDIT: this only happens when i load a saved game, and some (not all) characters have the night attacker trait, but when i attack it never shows the box for the choice.

You must install all mods first, or the changes that allow BI to work properly are wiped out. My installer only inserts changes as needed so all your mods should be preserved in BI.

Did you install any mods after you ran the installer?
Does this happen after you load a recently-created game?
Here's a test: start a new EB for BI game as Epiros. Save. Quit. Load the game and check if Phyrros has the night fighter trait. Attack something and see if you can click the checkbox.

1)no
2)no, for example i just created a new campaign with aedui and altough none of my generals has the night attacker trait i get the box, but can't check it. however when i load my romani campaign i have a few generals with night attacke, but i never get the box.
3)will do

EB for BI no longer works with EB 1.1, sorry. You'll just have to use EB 1.2.

Anyway why is it not for 1.1 anymore?

Well, for 1.1, you *could* run the installer with just the "main", "night battles" and "torches" checkboxes, but you wouldn't get any of the unit abilities, and I'm making no promises if it actually works or not.

Did you get the AI to actually use shieldwall?

Raygereio
03-10-2009, 18:02
As far as I can tell; if the AI army has shield wall capable units and you're attacking with a larger/better army, then the AI will place his units into shield wall most of the time.

When the AI attacks instead of defends, I've never seen the AI do it.

Ferromancer
03-12-2009, 04:02
The only thing that the AI would not use properly is Schiltrom, so I had it removed from the mod (if there's an interest in multiplayer EB for BI, I could add it there). All other abilities the AI seems to use at the right time.

I just want to thank you for your excellent job!

I have used your BI installer (including the unit options) in the mid of my current campaign. So far it works just nicely, without any problems. Not only your installer is extremely user-friendly, but being save-game compatible and mod-compatible it is as much as one can reasonably wish for! Thank you so much!:2thumbsup:  :2thumbsup:

Hey man nice one you got here... and honestly im getting addicted with my koinon hellenon campaign :D

having those shield wall on my hoplite really gets me in the zone for battles :D

though i have to turn off the night battles because they affect some of the features of EB vanilla (e.g. Victory Scroll, Faction Eliminated Scroll etc.) the pictures wouldnt show up.

i have a question man :D

how can i have a custom battle in EB:BI? what do i have to do?

thanks again :D nice job!

Hey Ferromancer,
I gave your BI.exe a try and I must admit that the new features are really nice. I was a bit scarred of that Seleucid fleet with four phalanxes in it - standing next to rhodes but... they just passed. :dizzy2: it was 271bc :inquisitive:

but I'd like to know if I can disable the nightbattles when I already installed your sub-mod because of this.

though i have to turn off the night battles because they affect some of the features of EB vanilla (e.g. Victory Scroll, Faction Eliminated Scroll etc.) the pictures wouldnt show up.

But anyway, very nice work.

If you could email/post/send a save file maybe we can figure out why or when this happens. I haven't seen this issue as of yet in my own games.

because other mods changes EDU(export description units) and the unit could not do a Schildwall.

in the intallation box de EB for BI you can disable or enable the special skill(shieldwall, warcry, swin)

other thing if you installed fine it the intro movi is the barbarian invacion?
you can check the shieldwall whit units how Triari and princeps. good look:yes:

I got the same problem that Cyrus had. Here's what happened:

I had to reinstall EB. I got EB1.2+all patches fixes and stuff and NO other mods for EB installed.
I installed BI for EB1.2 but instead of the usual menu I got the on from the multiplayer.

Now, here's my theory about what might be wrong: Before I installed BI for EB1.2 I played several multiplayer battles. Could that be the problem?

Also, which files can i permanently delete from my unsuccesfull EB RTW install without it breaking my working EB BI?

first to install The 'Mini Mod pack'

1.-to install rome total war 1.5
2.-to install barbarian invacion 1.6
3.-to install EB 1.1
4.-to install EB 1.2
5.-to install The 'Mini Mod pack'
6.-to install Barbarian Invacion for Europa Barborum

now there are many files that you need to back up and i do not know all the directorys
but if you install all it step by step there will not be any problem.

Ok perhaps i wasnt clear enough,

I have EB working with BI - But not with RTW.

I want to download The Mini Mod Pack, but im not sure if its compatible with BI

I would also like to download the phalanx mini mod aswell

Im not sure which files i need to backup incase i install ^^those^^ mods incorrectly and it all goes wrong

And finally i would like to know which (if any) files i can delete from my failed EB-RTW installation (Afterall i dont need em right? i mean, i have EB-BI working - surely the files i want deleting are just wasting space?????)

If im talking nonsense just say - im not a computer genious, or even that computer literate

On a separate note - Does anybody know if sheild wall works with the phalanx mod? what happens when both are on?

Thankyou

You mean TWFanatic's phalanxmod? It works just fine together with shield wall; as long as you don't use shield wall offensively (put unit in shield wall and then charge) you'll get the desired effect of hoplites staying together and pushing the enemy.

One thing, and this is just personal opinion, but Ferromancer's installer among other things also tweaks the spacing of units. I'd change the values of hoplite units back to the original ones if you're going to use the phalanx mod; otherwise there'll be to much space between seperate soldiers in a unit when out of shield wall and it won't really look right.

I changed the spacing of units, because otherwise the units all crowd around together and shuffle about when put into a shieldwall, and it looks ridiculous and unrealistic.

If you don't like the results just untick the unit formations box in my installer to get rid of the shieldwall and changed unit spacings.

its me again... i was also curious about the original spacing and the sheild wall thing... can you give us a screenshot of what happens with the original spacing on sheild wall? are they all bouncing about?

and i became curious about it when i :

a.)put my hoplitai in sheildwall
b.)then i make them walk
c.)then turned off the sheildwall

(now im amazed because they walked in formation, not returning to the loose formation but still in the tight formation of the sheild wall)

d.)when they get near the enemy when i turn on sheildwall they just raise their spears and poof sheildwall formation...

so i got curious that if the original spacings were made then if i turn on sheild wall they will just raise their spears... :)

nice mod tho! :D

Running into a problem running 1.2 with BI, both with and without this installer. I had a clean EB 1.1 running on BI 1.6 by means of altering the .exe in the shortcut. I patched up to 1.2, started a new campaign, and all of my starting characters got the new recruited general trait that goes with client rulers. Gave up and switched to using the regular RTW 1.5 .exe. Today I found this mod, installed it with everything but the fixes (already done) and the graphics options, and started a new campaign fine. First turn in I get client ruler traits again. What'd I do wrong?

That is the order I installed in, I just played for some months between steps 3 and 4. Now that I think about it, I may have used the 1.1 installer for BI and never uninstalled it before using this new 1.2 installer. Probably my issue. Will reinstall everything tonight and see if that fixes my issue.

Edit: Reinstall of just EB 1.1, 1.2, and then EB for BI seems to have cleared it up. Thanks for helping the doofus who forgot his old installs.

If you turn off shieldwall while they are marching, they won't space out. You have to give them the command to halt, then have them walk again. It's just how the engine works.

06-01-2009, 11:04
Ferromancer, in descr_strat you forgot to change (or at least it didn't change that in my installation) "campaign imperial_campaign" into "campaign barbarian_invasion". Because of this can_swim does not work.

Beware though that when you change this you need to alter the text files for the campaign descriptions too, because else they won't show up anymore.

Has anyone ever had problems achieving the victory screen with a campaign they switched from rtw.exe to bi.exe with this mod? Just curious about one of my campaigns I thought I had just won...

I don't mind starting a new game, just not sure if I should continue with the one I'm on. :charge:

Ferromancer,

Do you have any plans of implementing Horde ability for Sakae, Sauromatae and (optionally) Pahlava?

I know I haven't posted here in a while (busy with other things) but I have addressed a bug brought up above about an entry in desc_strat being "imperial_campaign" instead of "barbarian_invasion". This fix was actually tricky, as a number of other files had to be modified and with the proper encoding. I have also added two new options to the installer: (1) the ability to select alternate brightness settings and (2) the giant trees fix. I will update the first page of this thread shortly to reflect the updates.

Ave mate, good approach

But check hardcoded copy path (c:/program file/activision/rome - total war) for your *.dll file. In case another path for RTW,BI,EB your installer miss it.

The dll path is not hard coded. It uses whatever directory you typed in the installer.

Hi Ferromancer it's been a while since I used your installer 0.81 I think.

I've now finished a full Roman campaign in 1.2 using Lz3's mod pack but I want to do a fresh re-install and use you BI installer especially now you've added win conditions and chopped the trees!

However I want to add other mods namely;
City Mod
Forced Diplomacy
Darth's AI formations.
Konny's Allied legions
Gallic helm correction

Do any of thes econflict and if not what is the sequence to install starting with vanilla RTW?

Thanks

Hi, I have the Problem, that during the Instalation of this minimod the programm tells me that a file named EBforBIHelper.dll wich should be in the EB folder is missing. :help:

I also wanted to ask, wheter this mod: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=105242&page=20
Is compatible with your BI mod. :juggle2:

Edit: i can specify my problem now.

If i Install EB 1.1 + 1.2 + the fixes and on top this mod for BI exe, i have the "select an item from the list" bug.

If i first Install the minimod pack, game isnt starting at all. :embarassed: :help:

I've set up the installer so that it makes changes to files line-by-line, so in theory it shouldn't conflict with anything. The only trick is that you have to run my installer last.

Another thing, don't use the trivial script. Use the shortcut provided to you by the installer.

Why did you install rome total war and barbarian invasion to your desktop? That would explain a lot of things going wrong.

Here is what you're supposed to do. Since you have windows XP, all you have to do is:

1) Install RTW (just use the default directory)
2) Install BI (just use the default directory)
3) Install the BI patch
4) install EB 1.1 (USE THE DIRECTORY THAT RTW INSTALLED TO IN PROGRAM FILES, something like c:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\, not EB's default directory--that directory is for VISTA users running under high security mode)
5) install EB 1.2
6) Run my installer (just use the default directory. if everything went well, the button is not greyed out)

Huh, I wonder why it looked for it there. No matter, I'm glad it finally worked out for you. In fact, your issue was the same as one a lot of other people had, so I recommend that people give the installer a second chance if there were unable to start a game properly.

Hi! Awesome work you've done here!!!

Forgive my ignorance, but...

I am a Vista User. I've been running EB on vanilla for quite some time, and it's been working beautifully. Naturally, I disabled User Account Control (evil incarnate) and gave EB all clearances etc.

So I uninstalled all that recently, and now I'm starting from scratch.

So you're saying that I SHOULD install RTW in Program Files? Or will your BI installer work if I just put RTW in C:/ in my own folder?

Where you install RTW is up to you. Simply point to the path containing your exe when running your installer. It will even warn you if it's the wrong directory. The EB team doesn't recommend using program files for Vista users such as yourself, which is explained here (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=80270). Of course, you could try installing to that location yourself, I won't stop you :)

You must choose the correct directory where BI exe is located or else the installation will not let you continue. It's also smart enough to know if you're trying to pick a new directory that doesn't have it, and won't let you click okay until you find it :)

Where exactly is BI.exe exactly within the BI files? I can't find it although that might be because I repaired BI instead of reinstalling it. I'll try that and then will attempt to use this mod again :)

EDIT: Ok, I found it and installed it, but it tells me that MSS32.DLL was not found. What now?

Sounds like your BI install is hosed, though you may be able to gracefully recover by following the instructions on this thread (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/archive/index.php/t-55682.html).

Great installer - thanks again ferromancer. I've tried a little EB with your EB for BI installer and separately with Alexander.

The Alexander battlefield AI seems a bit better (though thats relative - it's still not very smart, just doesnt throw generals into the middle of an enemy army just to kill skirmishers at the start of the battle) and it does seem to combine armies at the campaign level before attacking.

With BI the campaign AI does seem a bit more aggressive and the Romans did invade Corsica by sea (though only with 2 units) and the shield wall is nice, but the battlefield AI isnt very great so i think (not sure yet) i prefer it with Alexander - though no-one seems to have made an installer for EB with Alexander that's even half as easy to install as your one for EB with BI.

Hmm, I'm unable to start new campaigns, it states: Select/Choose and item from the list :inquisitive:

How did you install the game?
It's supposed to be in this order; one of the causes I've read for that error is if you use the patches for RTW either before or after installing BI. Don't know if that's the only cause.

-RTW
-BI
-1.6 Patch
-EB 1.1
-EB 1.2
-Optionally any other mod
-This mod

Moosemanmoo

I think it went:
Rome
EB 1.1
EB 1.2
BI
BI 1.6
This mod

I read back a few pages and it something about editing the descr_strat folder can also cause this :inquisitive:
Oh I don't know

I'm happy to start campaigns on vanilla and continue them on BI, as night battles aren't all that important to me

I really don't want to have to uninstall everything and start from scratch

I installed:
RTW:GOLD
EB 1.1
EB 1.2
This mod.

And when I select a campaign to play and press the next button, it gives me a CTD without error messages, just a clean desktop, what should I do?

And yes, I'm using Vista

Just did a brand new install of RTW, BI 1.6, EB 1.1, EB1.2 and finally your patch and I cannot get past the part where it says select from the list. Today is the first time installing any of those on my new harddrive. It keeps giving error line 31 column 1 unexpected start date of campaign when game closes. Any solutions for this?

I am using XP Service pack 2 and I am installing all on my second harddrive under E:\games\rome total war.

So, I've been happily playing EB 1.2 for vanilla RTW for some time, then find out I can do it for BI through this. Problem is, I now cant start any new campaigns (message saying "select item from list" within the game), it crashes to desktop when I try to start a historical battle, I can load my existing campaigns but it crashes to desktop after battles (campaign map works fine), and in custom battles I can get up to selecting armies but when I move to the next screen it in fact takes me back to the previous one.

Any ideas what the problem might be? I use XP SP3.

Hello everybody. I apologize for not replying sooner. For those still having problems with the installer, and appear to be installing things in the right order, I have a possible solution for you. When running the installer, keep an eye out for the scrolling text box that posts messages regarding the installation. Copy and paste these messages on here--that might give a better clue as to what's going on. I have some theories, but they can't be confirmed unless I have some technical information.

It appears a files are failing to copy over from one local directory to another, but not files extracted from the installer--those copy over fine. You aren't running a limited account or running vista with User Account Control are you?

Im using an XP SP3 admin account, so it shouldnt be a problem with that.

Take me through the install order; it shouldnt be an issue there but I may have misread something.

Short and simple, from somebody who installed successfully:

How did you install the game?
It's supposed to be in this order; one of the causes I've read for that error is if you use the patches for RTW either before or after installing BI. Don't know if that's the only cause.

-RTW
-BI
-1.6 Patch
-EB 1.1
-EB 1.2
-Optionally any other mod
-This mod

Hi,

I'm having a problem with EB1.2 with BI - I hope someone can help.

I installed as instructed but did the EB1.2 updates manually before installing the BI setup exe. No other mods.
So the problem is as follows - when I capture a town/city if I click on the recruitment tab I crash to desktop.
Running under XP SP3. I've previously been running EB1.2 with RTW with no issues.

Thanks in advance.

Don't do the EB1.2 updates manually :)

I have tried the install both ways now. First try I installed
RTW
BI
1.6
EB 1.1
EB 1.2
BI Mod

and that failed as the game would not allow me to choose a faction because of errors with year. I then tried
RTW
1.3
1.5
BI
1.6
EB 1.1
EB 1.2
BI Mod

and again got the same problem. I am running XP Service pack 2 as an admin. Soon installing Windows 7 64bit so I can't imagine what problems I will have with just EB soon.

Why not wait awhile for Windows 7? If it is anything like vista, you will have your hands full of problems and wasted RAM. XP is a solid OS. I see no reason to switch, unless you just have to have more "eye" candy.

If you have alex, go with the mod pack. Very stable. I had no problems with the following process:

RTW-Gold > Alex > EB 1.1 > 1.2 > official fixes > minimod pack (3.1) > LZ3's script adaptation > phalanx mod > RS textures mod > naval strat mod > Lysander's sihunet formations adaptations > EOM 2.1b V.T. Marvin's Adaptation

The new computer I built has 6 gigs of RAM but XP only supports 4 so I have 2 not being utilized. I still have 1 more channel available so I could cheaply add another 2 gigs if I wanted. I do have Alex so I might just try that route.

Hello!

Well, I have some problems with installing EB for BI. My problems are the following https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?p=2377930#post2377930

Any suggestions about how to install it correct? Order? And how to install pathes correct? RTW 1.3 then 1.5 then BI then 1.6 then EBs and mod?

Hi Ferromancer,

Is there any way to set EB for BI to windowed mode? It seems to increase my performance by something like 50%, but for some reason I cannot change it to that setting.

Thanks

I just did a thorough testing of my installer with EB 1.2 with different options, etc. and found no problems. If you could please copy and paste the text from the installer's output, I could help more with your difficulties. With one person it appeared that NO files were copied successfully from one directory to another, even though the installer was able to do other things without a problem. My impression is that perhaps there is an over-agressive antivirus/antispyware that is preventing files from being modified or copied. I recommend temporarily stopping your antivirus for the duration of the installer, and then turning it back on.

Hi

I wanted to say I love this mod, thanks for all the hard work you put into it! I was wondering if you could include konny's character traits mod so my generals will actually be able to gain command points, again thanks!

Hello chaps,

I have briefly searched this thread and I didn't find any similar problems to the one I am having.

Firstly I have RTW Gold Edition and followed the correct steps to install this mod. When the game loads it up says 1.1 in the bottom left corner...which I found strange as I installed EB 1.2 correctly? Anyways, the custom and historical battles work fine, but I cannot start a campaign with any faction other than the Saka. When I click another faction (i.e. Rome) it goes to desktop, minimises EB and opens 'Active Movie Window'. It's just a blank black screen...which can be closed down, then reappears when you click EB to maximise. Has anyone else experiences this problem? I tried uninstalling and reinstalling and I keep encountering this problem.

I'm not sure if this helps but I am running Vista, I was always playing EB on the normal RTW disc but since I bought the Gold Edition I thought I'd try this mod.

Many thanks,
SV

Cheers guys!

I tried to install Alex engine, but I can't seem to start it as a bug occur and I've a error message, so I deleted everything and re-installed everything with BI, hoping that things were more easy BUT NO! It just can't start neither and every time i press the shortcut I just have that message that's pop up :

Failed to copy the file 'D:\RTW\EB\sp game edu backup\map.rwm to 'D:\RTW\EB\Data\world\maps\base\map.rwm' (error 2 the system cannot find the file specified)

It pisses me off as I'd like to be able to try a new engine... thanks for any help pals

I had the same thing.
Use Search on ur computer to find map.rwm. Then copy it to the folder "D:\RTW\EB\sp game edu backup\". Then computer will copy it from there (e 'D:\RTW\EB\sp game edu backup\map.rwm) where it should be but it doesn't, to whatever it wants and it would be OK.

Thanks a lot, I've no more the error! now, as the 3 fates seems to hate me, when i click on the icon, I've no error, but they don't recognise the cd... Do I play with Rome cd or BI cd? or should I change the target of the EB Single Player icon?

Finn MacCumhail

Look to ur desktop or Run menu here u should see Europa Barbarorum for Barbarian Invasion icon with BI picture-icon. Also have you install 1.6 update on BI mod before? You should.

Or do you mean that after update 1.6 computer doesn't recognize the soft and ask to insert cd to ur drive? I have license disk, but after updating it asked me to do it. So I just find crack on the net. For updated version of course.

Could anybody tell me how to properly install this for steam (Rome - total war gold edition) with following mods (problem is: I can't install the mini-mod pack, it gives me a script error)
- Some trait changes
- Phalanx mod
- Force diplomacy
- AI Battle Formation
- Spoils of victory

The biggest problem is: I can't start the normal BI with a shortcut, I can only make a shortcut to Rome - TW gold via steam.
When I want to play the normal BI I need to double click on Rome - total war gold in steam, then I can choose between RTW and BI. So how can I change the parameter of the BI shortcut to start EB?

Edit: I think I got it working :).

happy new year guys :beam:

i installed this mod in the following order
1.RTW
2.RTW-BI
3.patched it to 1.6
4.EB 1.1
5.EB 1.2
6.this mod

i tested my previous EB 1.2 saves and they are compatible, the new campaign is working well and i have the new formations. u have not tested the night battles yet. i have one problem though, when i go to custom battle i can't see all the units available, especially the more generic units specific for each faction (like velites, principes, triari) for the romans or the reformed phalanx for the makedones are missing. well, they are not missing actually, sinse if i let the CPU pick my army they are there, even though the are without icons. but i can' see them in the recruitment screen. this happenes only in custom battle. can something be done about it?

thanx in advance :2thumbsup:

You should use the edu.txt in the "mp game backup folder" to play custom battle as per EB instruction.

The opposite is actually happening to me as I can see reformed phalanx for Macedon and all reform legions for Rome in custom. Maybe it's because I have the mp edu loaded before I installed this neat installer? OK nvm. Just found out the installer doesn't have edu for multiplayer which means no special abilities for custom battle.

If it's as easy as adding "shield_wall" to the units I'd be glad to do it. Just waiting for the OK(interest) from you guys and confirmation that it's possible to do with little room for error. I've little experience.

Cool mod.

With EB, I tread lightly, so usually it's only M/M for me [but if it's vanilla RTW or EGM or AmazonTW I go for H/H] Sorry for bringing non-EB here; I just want to emphasize my being careful with EB compared to others, because, for me, EB is more authentic and more dangerous to my troops.

Edit the preferences.txt file and change whichever item you want from false to true or true to false. Or you can re-run the installer.

May I just jump in here without having time to read the entire thread...

How is this installed? I have EB up and working on RTW..
Can I install BI over the top even though EB is installed now? Then I run your installer?

Thanks

Update: I reinstalled totally using instructions from this thread.
RTW
BI
BI1.5
EB1.1
EB1.2
EB BI mod

And I can't launch a campaign I just get something like Select from a list...
Tried twice reinstalling and still..

I am also having the "select item from list" problem. It is quite irksome, as I'm certain I'm installing everything in the correct order, and that there is no anti-virus software preventing copying from occurring. Here is the text from the setup window. Additionally, it is not the fact that the current installation is in Program Files: I have tried it in other locations as well with the same result. I would really appreciate any help you can give, as I'm really fond of EB and incorporating the fixes in this minimod would just be fantastic.

Thanks

HELP PLEASE!
some days ago i transferred the directory EB-BI from one HD to another HD (its name is D:\Rome total war-EB)
but then, when i started it it seems to have lost the mod BI.
I explain:
the introducing video is the original of RTW (it begins with carthaginian infantry marching....)
the units like hastati and principes don't have the shield_wall ability.
moreover, when i start it, the PC gives me this advice:
failed to copy the file 'D:\Rome - Total War-EB\EB\sp game edu backup\map.rwm' to ' rome- total war-EB\EB\data\world\maps\base\map.rwm' error 2: impossible to find the specified file (this last sentence is in italian).
what to do? if i reinstall B-BI mod, it will be save-game compatible? will it work?
desperate....

:help: Hello Ferromancer.:help:

I just get excited with the idea of play EB with BI engine. Then I tried and failed. I used the installer that you provide. I was able to enter the menus of EB after the Huns video of BI, and so on... But when I tried to create a new campaign, or a custom battle, I was sent back to the menus and nothing happens.
Well, I checked and my BI was version 1.4. And I read in some place that the EB for BI installer needs BI patch 1.6. So I uninstalled everything and started again from the begining.

Before continue, here's a quick description of my pc:
I use XP, and the machine is a Pentium IV 2.2GB, Motherboard Asus, 2GB Ram, A suficient video card (cant remember which now, and Im not in my computer) and suficient disk space. I'm pretty sure of that cause I've played Rome TW (1.5) and Barbarian Invasion (didnt had notice the version) for over a year and everything works well. I beggin to play Alexander to, but unistalled due to free some disk space to other things..
Now I have tried many combinations of installation and just cant update BI to 1.6. Every time I try to apply the patch (both 1.5 or 1.6, whatever...) I receive a message that "this patch only updates from 1.3 to 1.5" and gives me an adress to download the 1.3 patch. And when I go to options in BI, the version number displayed is 1.4.

I tried:
- RTW 1.0 > 1.1 > 1.2 > 1.3 > 1.5 > BI > and the 1.6 cannot be installed
- RTW 1.0 > 1.1 > 1.2 > 1.3 > BI > and either 1.5 or 1.6 cannot be installed
- RTW 1.0 > 1.3 > BI > and the same again
- RTW 1.0 > BI > and the same again
- I even try to install 1.3 and 1.5 after the BI but it became a mess..
In time, I use cracks, but in all times I didnt cracked the game. I was expecting patch and install everything first.

Well, there's pretty much nothing left to do now according to what I know about, so... please, Help Me!!!:help:
Thanks!!!

Reform problem?

I'm playing as romans and it's 241 BC, I already hold Segesta, Mediolanum, Patavium, Bononia, Lilibeo, Messana and Syracuse but nothing happens!
Should I wait more? The reforms randomly takes places in the next seasons?

The EB Faq says:
-At least year 242
-Hold 2 of these cities (Segesta, Mediolanum, Patavium, Bononia)
-Hold 2 of these cities (Lilibeo, Messana, Syracuse)

This had being change?

i beg again for help here.

i installed EB-BI but it requests me the map.rwm file.
and when i run it, the demo is the old one (with the carthaginians marching...) and the units still don't have the BI abilities.
i reinstalled this submod several times (i also reinstalled completely new RTW-EB), but still does not work.

what to do?
did anybody experience the same situation? already answered?
is somewhere available another map.rwm file to paste?

i installed EB-BI,
and when i run it, it says that it failed to copy the map.rwm file. into the folder (EB/data/world/maps/... and sp game backup) the map.rwm does not exist, there is only the file 'eb before BI map.rwm'
and when i run it, the demo is the old RTW one (with the carthaginians marching...) and the units still don't have the BI abilities. :furious3:
i reinstalled this submod several times (i also reinstalled completely new RTW-EB), but still does not work.

what to do?
did anybody face this before?
where to get this :skull: map.rwm file? if i simply paste it, could it work?

Welcome to the forums.

No, it's EB 1.2 that disables them. Do a forum search, there are a lot of threads about those units.

I want to, but I can't since my computer with EB stopped working.

On the top of my head, some possible causes.
1. You are changing Imperial_campaign files while you should be changing Barbarian_invasion files.
2. You have Vista or 7 and installed in Program Files
3. deleting map.rwm?
4. I don't know if those changes are save game compatible.

I can run the BI... but cant get capaign to play and the historical battles crash the game. i tried following the installer, but it is too fastfor my eye to catch anything. all i see is like

Extracting...
Lengthy path to my rome directory

I there a way to force installer to generate log file?

when i try to rrun preferences i have them working ok, but saving and exiting results in

my EB folder is 1.90GB atm, so i suppose most files are there.

Hello everybody. It's been a while since I've had any updates, but I have an important announcement about those who have had trouble using my installer.

If you are using windows 7 or windows Vista, my installer will not work properly if Rome Total War is installed in the program files directory. Bill Gates and company create a new security paradigm for windows, that requires special permissions to modify files in the program files directory. Any files modified without special privileges are copied to a separate directory somewhere in lalaland in the users directory. My installer doesn't know about the other directory, so a bunch of files are never found.

There is a workaround at the moment, and that's to follow the advice of the creators of EB, DO NOT INSTALL to the program files folder. Instead install it to your c:\users\yourusername or another easily-remembered directory like c:\games\RTW. My installer with then function normally, since the folders would be set with the proper permissions.

A more permanent workaround could either be a simple fix, or would require a rewrite of the installer. I would need to do more research on the matter.

I'm currently playing around with some code that will not only warn you if you've installed to Program Files on Vista, but will also check to see if you have v1.6 if BI. It's ready to deploy but my website has the flu. Once customer support fixes my problem I'll have the new version ready for you.

Edit: New version of the installer is ready, first post will be updated shortly.

Hey all,
I 've got a question (surprise surprise..)
I have already installed this mod on EB1.1, but now I want to start a 1.2 campaign (with BI.exe ofc.) without throwing away my 1.1 version of the game. So, I copied a clean RTW-Bi folder, installed EB in it and upgraded it to 1.2, did the fixes and tried installing EB for BI. First it said that, as I run Vista, I shouldn't have installed my RTW in C:/ Program Files. Because I never install games there, I assumed it was some sort of mistake, and running the installer in xp-compatibilty mode fixed that. I started it again, but this time it told me I had already installed EB with BI - which is ofcourse true. Now the question is: isn't it possible to install in twice,, in 2 different folders? I don't even consider playing EB without the Bi.exe (wel.. neh), so a little help would be appreciated :).

Which directory did you try to install it to? This might be a bug in the installer, and will be glad to fix it.

To answer your second question, only one instance of EB with BI can exist at the same time (per user I believe). Of course, you could always copy a successful installation of EB with BI manually and create your own shortcut, but I won't make any guarantee that it will work.

I just tried to install it to where my EB1.2 is installed: E/games/EB1.2 bla bla. But that's not the problem.. If I click the installer, it asks me for Vista permission, and then it says I can't install it twice (if I run it on xp compatibility mode) or that I can't install it to C/program files (which is kinda odd because I only clicked the installer, I didn't pick any folder or anything) if I run it without any compatibility modes. So if I want to play EB1.2 with BI.exe, I should remove the BI.exe installation (your file I mean) from 1.1? I'm also experiencing other problems concerning the two installs, such as a not working preferences program etc., but I used to play 1.0 and 1.1 simultaneously too, so I'm pretty sure I can get it to work.

Okay I think I know what's going on, it's checking for Vista too early in the install process, and since Program Files is the default directory, it will always nag in Vista. I have to find a better place to put it.

EDIT: I've put in a fix. It should give you a change to put in a better directory. Please try again to see if it's less naggy.

Yes. Reinstall Rome Total War and EB to a folder that you've created with the user you're logged in with. It cannot under any circumstances be in program files. The EB team does NOT support the game installed to \Programs, and as I've discovered with numerous people's problems, neither do I.

There's another way too, and it involves resetting the special permissions for the \Programs folder, but I don't recommend it.

A new security paradigm is being used in Windows Vista and newer, due to the numerous problems people have had with XP due to malware. The programs directory now has special permissions on it, so that if any files are modified, the modified copies are placed in a special users directory. This is why my installer would sometimes fail: it was trying to modify files that were no longer in the programs directory.

Hello,

I'd like to know which files are modified with your installer, and if its possible to "extract" them from your installer.

i've noticed that your installer will not permit an installation where there is no eb folder, and even when tricking him into thinking its true by creating a dummy EB folder, he won't create any txt.files except for win conditions.

Thanks!

The installer contains very few files. Most files are modified in place to reduce the size of the installer and to make it compatible with other mods for EB. Any files that are modified are renamed with the prefix eb_before_bi_*. I have also made my installer specifically resistant to tricking, to help prevent buggy installations.

But if you'd like to try, you *can* crack open the installer with 7-zip to see what files are there. So doing that and checking for the prefix should tell you what's different. It also copies a bunch of stuff from the BI directory--you can see this list in the output window of the installer.

It might actually be saving the file okay, but then you'd have to change the extension back to exe and see if it runs in Parallels on the mac. I don't own a mac and I don't know anybody who does, so I can't help you beyond that.

Ah, okay. Sorry to bother you further, but is there a way to get the files without using the .exe, to just kinda extract text files and place them where I want them?

Nope. For multiple reasons, the installer modifies files in place:
1) Some of these files are gigantic, while the actual changes are relatively small, bloating the size of the installer significantly.
2) There are many mods out there that make many modifications to these files, so there are conflicts. My installer is in theory compatible with any other minimod, so long as other mods are installed first.
3) Related to the above, it's very difficult to keep track of changes both within my own mod, with newer versions of EB, updates to bugfix forum, and newer versions of other people's mods. Keeping track of changes is very tedious and makes me very cranky.
4) Why not simply patch the files using a diff installer? Not only are people making many changes to the same file, they could even happen in the same location of a file. I am not willing to take that kind of risk.

In short, the NSIS installer copies files from the BI folder, I call a .net dll to modify most changes in place, and finally, the installer unpacks a small number of files which are very unlikely to be changed by anybody else.

So, you will have to use parallels or some other virtualization software to install BI and to also run my installer, since it won't run on the mac natively. If you have a relatively new Mac, you could also dual boot windows if you wanted to.

EDIT: I posted a reply to the EB for Mac thread (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?130342-EB-for-Macintosh-questions-amp-support-thread) in case they would like to work with me for a BI installer.

So I downloaded the installer and tried installing the mod, but when I got to the point where I'm supposed to choose the place of install, I got a message saying that I am running vista and the installer won't be able to continue if BI is installed under program files. I don't have BI installed under program files but the installer still won't work. Is there anything I can do to get it to work?

Make sure that when you run the installer, the destination folder is the same as the folder for BI.exe. It's not smart enough to scan your hard drive for your installation of Barbarian Invasion. You're seeing that message because the default install assumes you've installed it to program files under windows XP.

I will be installing this in the next few days and just read up on the process...So, all I have to do is Install EB over the regular game..then use this installer for on BI? I'm purchasing the RTW Gold Pack and won't be installing them in Program Files (as I have Windows 7). Does this mean BI will still take place at a later date as the vanilla copy, but just have the increased AI? Or will this effect the entire process, make BI just like running EB on the non expansion?

Thank You

If RTW gold contains BI, all you have to do is (1) install RTW, (2) Install BI, (3) Install the latest patch for BI, (4) install EB, (5) Install patches for EB, (6) Install any mods you like for EB, and the last step is to run my installer.

EB running on BI will start at the same date. All features in BI except for religion and schiltrom are implemented by my installer. If you don't like some of the features, you can turn them off when you run the installer.

Religion wasn't implemented due to conflicts with the four-seasons system of EB (religion would spread way too quickly) among other reasons. Schiltrom was buggy and the AI never used it properly.

For more information see the FIRST POST of this thread, as it contains a full, updated, description.

The install button remains greyed out until you select a directory with a valid EXE for BI. An unpatched or cracked exe will not work. And you definitely should be able to change folders (just tested on my win7 x64 box).

You likely do not have a valid installation of EB, or you've installed BI to a system protected folder (currently the installer just checks for Program Files - what folder did you install to?)

EDIT: Also, those instructions in that post are for installing EB with BI MANUALLY, which will likely just make things worse if you've run this installer first.

C:, but outside Program Files. What should I do?

I have a windows 7 x64 box. Rome Total War is installed to c:\Games\Activision\Rome - Total War\ , and I created the C:\Games\ folder using the same account that I used to install RTW. This garauntees that RTW has all the necessary permissions to write to that folder. Otherwise it spams files to a hidden folder in C:\Users\[your account], and this causes lots of problems. Also, make sure you follow the instructions on the first post of this thread. RTW, BI, and EB and all the patches have to be installed in a certain order. In my case, after following the proper install order of RTW, BI, and EB, I ran my installer at c:\Games\Activision\Rome - Total War\. When you run my installer, there is a text box that spits out messages on copying files and patching files. Make sure you look at this text box and copy it somewhere in case you can't run EB with BI, so I can see what went wrong.

I have a few questions though. Does the RS2 environments for EB mod affect or clash with yours? And is is possible for you to disable
the campaign map voices of units and characters in a future patch. Hearing that horrible barbarian imitation accent yell "General" at you
really is quite annoying.
Once again, thank you for this mod.

In theory, this installer is compatible with any mod, so long as you run my installer last. Basically, install EB, patch it, patch BI, install any mods you want, then run my installer.

What is this RS2 environment mod by the way? It sounds interesting. EDIT: I found the mod, at http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=415513

I'll give it a shot.. hopefully it works.

So, you just don't want to torrent this or don't know how? It's much easier than having a web address host it, I reckon.

Ferromancer

Okay, I've hacked and slashed to the point where you are no longer required to enter an address. Now all you need is a name, country, and email.

On torrenting, at 1.5 megs, it's too small for a torrent, and there probably won't be enough seeds anyway.

As for the top-heavy shopping cart, I plan on putting more software up there. Eventually there will be bigger software products on there that are not donationware. So I can quit my job. Some day. Maybe.

The installer checks the date on the EXE to make sure that it's installing against the correct version of BI. You could try patching the demo to version 1.6, but I have no idea if that will work or not.

I tried patching the demo with the 1.6 patch but it said it could not locate Rome: Total War - Barbarian Invasion. I'm using Windows 7 and I saved the RTW folder with BI demo + EB in My Documents. I also renamed that foder "RTW with Europa Barbarorum". Why is the patch not able to find BI? Is this because I am using a demo or because of the folder name or file location?

I would assume that the demo .exe has been created in such a way that you cannot use it to emulate the full expansion. Also, and no offence, but if you want to use the expansion, you should pay for it.

Ferromancer,

First off - thanks for the BI-based mod. I've been playing my lastest campaign for about 10 months. As long as I limit the continuous gameplay to 2 hours or less at a stretch I get no CTDs.
I've got a gameplay question that I hope you or one of the experts here can shed some light on. I achieved Polybian reform a long time ago. Now its about 141 BC in my campaign. I've conquered most of historical Rome's territories except for Brittania, Iberia and the Ptolemaic lands in along the southeast section of the Mediterranen. I've eliminated the Epirotes and the Carthaginians. The question I have is about upcoming reforms and technological advances. I've continued playing and many years have passed since the Polybian reforms but I've seen nothing since. Are there futher reforms in the BI executeable? Are there certain trigger points I simply haven't hit yet? I was expecting to eventually come to a point where ballistae, scorpions, and the like would be developed. Do you have any ideas about this?
Thanks,
- CJ

Installation of certain mods will break your savegame compatability. Also, upgrading EB could break your save as well.

Is there anyway to just copy the failed objects manually? And what the dll file was trying to write to the one file it failed on. Thanks for any help.

Hi, when i run the installer it just stops/ freezes when copying\eb_before_bi_export_descr_buildings.txt,
Can anyone help with this?

edit;Actually I've just realised I have a similar problem to the post above

I'm still not sure either, tried again with the same process as above and got about the same result. It doesn't fail on the same items, but it will on a few different things.

Friedrich Barbarossa:

If you could find out what the error messages said, that would help a lot.

It could be because it's failing to detect .net on your machine, and the code in the installer that's supposed to download it for you isn't being run. Did it ever come up with a message saying you needed to download the .net framework?

Hi Ferromancer, and many thanks for your installer. I had a message saying I needed to download .net , but I said no to it and the message disappeared, then I pressed the install button. There were a number of "copy failed" error messages during installation but at the end it said installation was completed. Now I'm playing with the BI shortcut; the game has naval invasions and no giant trees (so far), although unit banners are still showing up despite checking for them to be removed before setup. Unfortunately, battle crashes are quite frequent--practically every turn (I'm playing a Lusotanni campaign started with RTW exe.). Do you think the .net issue is responsible?

Update: Never mind the unit banners. Battle crashes have stopped and my interrupted Lusotanni campaign has passed the critical year 175 BCE. Don't wanna jinx it but there seems cause for rejoicing. Bless you Ferromancer!

Thanks for the installer, sorry I did not say that before. I got it working after first copying some of the folders manually as explained in this thread: forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?75667-EB-with-BI&p=1433613#post1433613 , then running the installer. Some of the folders related to unit banners and night battles seemed to have failed (there were more copy failed's with those selected), but I'm not sure where those folders are going and I don't mind right now. So thanks again for the installer.

So, um... I have an RTW Gold installation with Steam [Windows 7], which puts everything in C:\Program Files\Steam\ directories. Does this mean, I am out of luck for installing this mod?

Hi, Slaists,
This thread might help you https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?129941-EB-and-Steam&highlight=install+eb+steam.

Hi Vollorix

Thanks for the response. However, my problem does not lie with installing EB for Steam [even though Steam RTW is inside Program Files directory which is not recommended by EB]. In summary, EB 1.2 installs just fine [or, I hope so; since checking the install does find several file irregularities; I assume they're due to me running RTW gold].

My real problem lies with installing the sub-mod of this thread: the one allowing to use BI.exe. Before running, the sub-mod installer is checking whether RTW is installed inside "program files" or not. If the installer finds RTW inside "program files", it stops the install... (does not allow me to select the proper RTW directory under steam; the proceed button stays grayed out).

So I've just installed this, I'm using Steam. Everything seems to work until I choose a faction and start a game, then this error pops up and the game crashes. Any help?

::EDIT:: Eh, nevermind, I figured I needed a reinstall anyway, that cleared it up.

How did you get the installer to work with Steam?

I don't have Steam in Program Files. Seems the installer doesn't like it when Steam is in the Program Files directory. I'm curious as to the reasoning for that. Maybe a permissions issue?

I would suggest maybe moving the whole RTW folder to a directory outside of program files, then point the installer to that location, and move the folder back once it's installed.

Hmm, if the installer does any registry entries [it might not...] based on the temporary location of the RTW folder (outside the Steam directory), this might introduce some extra CTD's after the RTW folder is moved back to its proper place... Anyone know of a way to get the installer working with the default RTW location inside the Steam directories?

I can't imagine it would touch the registry.

Hi ferromancer.

a -foolish- question:
i am using your mod, together with EB 1.2 MINI MOD PACK.
I noticed the Jirisys mega-mod-pack, and would like to try it.
but it is probably concerning only the RTW version, without BI.
so i guess that, installing jirisys mega-pack-mod, it will erase your mod, or at least, will conflict with.

I have to assume that it does not work with 'eb for BI', does it?
if i paste Jirisys's mod, your will be overwritten (and in fact lost), correct?
is there anyway to make both the mods cooperate?

thx

Hi all!
I have the same problem with activemoviewindow as this person, but I don't know how to eliminate it. :wall:

Many thanks,
SV

Any opinions? :inquisitive:

Everything is fixed now.

Here is the link: http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?454385-Problem-with-Activie-MovieWindow&highlight=activemovie

Here is an original speech of author, which helped me (in case that thread may disappear somewhere):

I searched the mircrosoft.com support and googled/binged/yahooed the entire web... deinstalled Windows Media Player 11 (using the default WMP 9), reinstalled the WMP 11, downloaded and installed the newest and final DircetX 9.29-Jun2010, played around with all kind of Windows and WMP settings - but nothing worked (for me). Then I found this lifesaver here at TWC.

Well to get to the point, the following worked for me:

Go to the folder EB\Data\fmv\lose and deactivate all video files (.wmv) there, by moving them into a newly created folder named '[DISABLED]' (or the like) in the same folder
I.E. cut and paste all video files in EB\Data\fmw\lose into EB\Data\fmv\lose\[DISABLED].
So now the EB\Data\fmv\lose folder should only contain the tga-files and the '[DISABLED]' folder (which contains the video files).

That worked for me at least. If you still get the ActiveMovie window my guess is to additionally try this:

In EB\Data\fmv\lose additionally cut and paste all tga-files into the [DISABLED] folder, so that the EB\Data\fmv\lose folder only contains the '[DISABLED]' folder
And/or do the above to the EB\Data\fmv\intros folder perhaps

Regards!

Good luck everyone! :creep: :creep: :creep:

Apologies if anyone's already asked this...I recently returned to the EB fold, but have only just relocated my BI disk, so I was wondering: would I be able to continue my current savegames through the BI .exe after I've installed BI, even though these savegames were started through vanilla (i.e. 'pre-BI') .exe?
