View Full Version : Why do people lie so much?

Here's the deal. I was talking to this guy today and I told him face on about an article I gave for the school newspaper. "Yeah, I know, but the editor said that he just doesn't like it. I'm honest." And the editor just said to me 3 days earlier that the article was good. :inquisitive:

After this, my room-mate told me: "I know it's bad to lie, but sometimes you have to do it."

Any opinions?

People lie because it's easier. If they're caught, they'll deal with the consequences in the future but it gets them out of the present situation without any immediate trouble.

Is it not obvious, young man? Here: people lie because they are human. Humans are wretched creatures by default. They are corrupt, nasty, filthy, irrational, treacherous, selfish, and so forth. To lie is only one of the many negatives humans have. Expect to encounter many wretched humans in the future :laugh4:

............

Actually, I would dare say any human you encounter is probably wretchedly corrupt or messed up in some way. So, when you walk down the street and spot a human, you know what to think by default :laugh4:

GeneralHankerchief summed it up pretty well there. I suppose it gets you out of awkward situations more specifically, then there's also compulsive liars etc...

@Bijo: I don't think its just because we are all scum, I only ever feel that way when I'm walking through Clydebank.:clown:

There are 4 categories of lies.

1.Rumors - These are lies that you think is truth. Through the grape-vine, out the rumor mill. It often can be greviously incorrect, partly-truthful, or some errors.

2.White Lies - Your roommate asks why the room isn't clean, and you say it's because you haven't cleaned it yet, when in reality you had a party the night before, and he didn't know about it.

3.Lies - You tell a friend that they 'smell fine' when the you could label it 'Cheese and Cattle Excrements' and it would be an understatement.

4.Other Lies - Whatever Tosa Inu declares false.

It depends on the situtation.

Why lie when you can obfuscate?

It's sexier. :kiss2:

You can make lying sound better by saying 'enhancing the truth'.

Lie to save your life, lie on the internet to protect your identity, but in all other situations, tell the truth.

Being in HELL!!!!! MUHAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!! wouldn't neccesarily make him the devil. He could be a lesser demon of some sort.

I know how you feel edyzmedieval.

----------------------------------------------------
My trumpet tutor for the first 4 years of High School always told me I was doing well, making progress etc. But then one day last year he started telling me I should stop learning trumpet and take up the trombone instead. He kept saying I would find it easier. Yet when I asked why I couldn't continue with trumpet he said it was the way I was playing that was making it harder for me. When I asked exactly what was wrong he didn't answer me outright and instead told me that it wasn't really anything but I should learn trombone because it would be much easier for me.

This got me really frustrated because I knew that if it wasn't really anything then he wouldn't keep nagging at me to give it up. But then I went to a trumpet seminar thing in Auckland where the guy there was talking about good technique. When it came to getting everyone to have a go at playing something he asked me if I knew that the position of the trumpet mouthpiece on my embouchure was making things difficult for me. I didn't and so he told me to speak to my tutor about it. Then my tutor told me that he did know I'd had bad technique from the beginning and didn't correct me because he didn't want to discourage me.

Then, by a lot of lucky coincidences, the trumpet player who gave the seminar ended up needing to come down to Rotorua on business once a week and so I booked lessons in with him during that time. On the first day he told me everything I was doing wrong, and then said that to fix it will be extremely tough and I'll be going back to square one again. But after 6 months I should be back up to playing as well as before, the only difference being that practice will be limiting how good I become, rather than bad technique. It was tough too, I could barely make a sound for the first 2 weeks, but I'm glad I made the effort.
----------------------------------------------------

So anyway, sorry for boring everyone with that story. Personally I think that everyone needs a little criticism now and then. Particularly in the creativity side of things. If you get told your stuff is good all the time then how will you know to improve? I prefer someone who'll tell me outright when they think my work isn't very good or if they don't like something. It is much more helpful than when somebody waffles on trying not to hurt my feelings.

I think it would be good for you to try and find out where you went wrong in the article, maybe have a discussion with the editor about it. If you know what the editor didn't like about it then you'd be able to improve for next time. It's much better than just guessing about where you went wrong.

Jerry, just remember, it's not a lie if you believe it.

people lie because it´s convenient.

It can be very convenient to tell the truth too.

Woman: "Are you going to miss me?"
Me: "What? No, of course not: I won't miss you at all. In fact I'd be glad if you'd leave :saint:"

Psycologically speaking if you say you wont miss them since its soo absurd theyll take it as a joke

I lie to save my skin sometimes.. And when I know telling the truth wont do much good. Might as well risking it.
