What are the largest battles (in terms of army size/numbers) you've fought?

Here is one of mine: 2 full stack Polybian armies vs 2 stacks of silver chevroned uber rebels north of the alps.

I don't have a screenie, but it was Maks vs. Rome, 3000 vs. 6500, near Rome. I lost the flower of my cavalry and they lost their army. ~D

In a Seleucid campaign i 0.8something, playing on huge unit settings, I attacked a Ptolemid stack near Palmyra which was eleutheroi at the time. At least two rebel stacks consisting mostly of eastern skirmishers joined battle. I believe I lost about 2000 men and the enemy over 7000.

My largest battle saw 11564 men on the field. I made a small AAR about it a while ago:

That's about the size of my largest, my 1 army against 3 armies, I like the odds, but my troops get tired, and run out of missiles, the poor poppets. I have had quite a few around the 9,500-10,500 size.

Unfortunately I deleted the savegame of my largest battle :wall: So I can't say for sure the numbers involved, but to put this way:

I was playing as the Romani, against the Aedui. The battle was fought on the outskirts of Mediolanum. I had a full army stack (comprised of Camillan units) and a quarter stack supporting (comprised of Celtic and Italian Mercenaries). The Aedui had a full stack and a half stack all of their own regional units. Of course, as the AI often does, they had little cavalry support.

Unfortunately, when the battle started, I found myself unexpectedly controlling the Mercenaries instead of the full stack that I wanted to control. But I was clever. I disabled the AI for reinforcements thing, then pulled off an Alamo with the mercenaries (engage as many enemy troops as possible, kill as many of them as the mercs can, and then be utterly massacred). By the time the Aedui were finished dealing with the mercs, the rest of my army had arrived on the field and I was able to take control of it and easily slaughter the Gauls. Unfortunately, because I had to sacrifice the mercs, it was a clear victory instead of a heroic one.

Still, as I always say, better that some turncoat barbarian scum die instead of good, honest Romans.

If I had to guess as to numbers, I'd guesssss...roughly 3800-4000 Romans against 4300-4700 Aedui. When it comes to losses, I think the Romans lost about 700-1000 men. The Aedui 3500-4000.

What I don't understand is isn't the game engine suppose to support a 10,000 unit max cap? So I thought the game would crash or something if you had over 10,000 soldiers fighting...

In SPQR:TW mod, 15000(Roman) vs. 19000 (Gauls)

In EB, 9000 (Roman) vs. 8700 (Makedonia)

Not trying to be rude here, but does that mod have apoint except to create the largest possible blood bath? I mean you even have those sheets so you can count how many people you've killed, and all buildings seem to be pretty much insta build, just to let you make yet more men to feed into the meat grinder....:sweatdrop:

how the HELL do you guys get those many men into a fight?!

1. It depends on the situation.
2. You have to have a good PC, or edit preference.txt (enable "unlimited men on battlefield")

Man, my battles are minor arguements compared to yours, my biggest battle has only been 3700 Baktrians(me) vs. 4000 AS guys.

Wow, how do you do that? Which file in the EB folder?

As he said, edit preference.txt (enable "unlimited men on battlefield") but only bother if you have a good PC.
I change mine by first doing a search in Windows XP- Files and Folders, type in: preference.txt(might be preferences.txt), clic on it when it finds it, scroll down to the right part, change it and at the top of the document clic on the 'save'
And seen as you don't seem to be aware of preference.txt you could consider while your there, disabling the ghastly green arrow markers and switching to full screen battles, via 'minimal UI'

Personally I prefer just 1 army of my own, I value my troops to much to let the AI near them.
The largest scrap I have tried was testing my PC via Barbarian Invasion on max settings, it struggled slightly on a 20,000+ night river battle.

20,000+ night river battle.

Wow...what are your specs?

My comp lags on medium to med-high when there are more than 8000 troops fighting.

Fought a battle as the Epeirotes vs. the Romani, with me besieging Roma.

If I remember correctly, it was about a 12,500 man battle. Approximately 5,500 for me and the rest to the Romans. I lost. Badly. Something of a "pyrrhic victory" though for the Romans. This was a camillan Roman army too.

Hello!
I'm new here, but would like to share my biggest battle(s)

the largest battle I had wasn't too big: ~800 seleukids vs ~2500 romani (unit scall normal- plus I usually remeber/ record the deaths more) ended 15 min. later in a heroic victory with almost all the romani dead (96%),with the faction leader and faction hier of the romsni dead, while I lost (still remember vividly- not lying) an unbelievably low 17 dead and three dozen wounded (too bad the pics were lost for evidence- least the written records are here), but it was fought near Taras, c.200BC. The trick was that it was basically a giant ambush that hit the romans in the rear, and left, between a hill and the coast:laugh4: . commander:Ho basileus seleukeias (king of the seleukids)., I played the battle on the very day EB full version was released, and was the last pre-EB1 battle fought.

breakdown:

1-Basileus ( chev. gold)
2-2 units of hellenikoi kataphractoi (all understrength, with 2-3 silver chev.)
3-7 pezhetaroi and argyraspides (argyraspides at 1/2 stregth, rest 40-55men per unit, between 3 bronze and 1 gold, average at two silver)
4-2 toxotai ( 3 bronze chevrons)
5-2 peltastai (ditto)
6-1 prodromoi (1 silver)

WOAH!! That must be amazing to play with so many men. You are very, very lucky people. I can't play with more than 7,000 unless I want an intolerable lag, and that's with all unit settings turned down to the lowest.

Anyone know how I could play bigger battles? More RAM maybe? Can you buy RAM for a laptop?

i think u can, but u have to send it in for the upgrade.
my larges- about 6,000 sweboz vs. just 3,000 of my romani. twas a bloody day.....

how much is you virtual memory? my laptop used to lag till I doubled it to 1GB-give that a crack.

TWFanatic

It's always giving me this message that it doesn't have enough virtual memory. So I assume I don't have enough. How much does it cost to upgrade?

Thanks for the tip!

i got a gig for about $50

Ibrahim

I meant there is some option in control panel to modify it-I don't remember where exactly, but that's how I did it; virtual memory is the amount of memory taken to preform loading functions, buying 1 GB won't necessarily improve things, so try modifying that and if that doesn't work, then you buy the 1GB.

Increasing RAM up to 2GB will have a profound impact on EB on most computers. While the virtual memory settings may help to a degree, the best performance is gained by using as little virtual memory as possible.

Hooahguy
01-24-2008, 02:19
ya- i went up to 2 gigs- i can play huge battles, and before w/ just 1.25 gigs, i could play huge, but not that large.....
get 2 gigs- its worth it if you love EB.....

Alright then. I'll look around to see how I can use less virtual memory and buy some some RAM.

Intranetusa
01-25-2008, 03:22
What settings do you guys use? I think on huge/high, I'm limited to about 8000-9000 troops. Anything over and I experience major lag

Hooahguy
01-25-2008, 03:29
same here- i once had 11,000 in a custom battle in RTW, but the FPS was horrid, less that 1 FPS!
needless to say i quit......
(that was before i found out about EB and before i got 2 gigs of RAM and a new video card)

I want a new system so bad. I wanna play with huge unit sizes. The biggest I've had is maybe a 4000 man battle in my old scipii vanilla campaign, I could run the huge unit size back then.
