Another idea i have thought about is altering what happens to the besieged units as they starve in a castle...

When the besieged army surrenders the units could be treated as prisoners and sold back for a ransom. Thus factions wouldn't lose their valuable Kings, generals and heirs so easily, assuming they pay the ransom that is...

at least this way it would give greater advantage to the defender in terms of making the decision.

As it stands they effectively just disappear (starve?!) and surely surrender would happen before starvation...?

Also, will there be any other way to prevent building destruction other than the method of making buildings income producers? This way doesn't guarantee no building destruction, i think it lessens it although i can't be sure it even does that as income producers still sometimes get destroyed!?

If a may take your idea one step further:

Why not swith attrition to the besieger, not the besieged ?

Historically the army that was in front of the gates lost people due to plague, desertion, skirmishes etc.
The soldiers inside did hardly ever loose people untill the end of the siege, and in that case surrendered more often than not (becoming prisoners).

While I agree with most that you should not loose so heavy in facilities that should be inside the gates anyway (unit production etc), I think it would be more accurate that the fields and farm improvements suffer heavily (since the besieger where "living of the land" (foraging).

Another thought just crossed my mind:

Some truely unsuccessfull sieges where so because the city received supplies (and in some cases even fresh troops) by sea. If I have a traderoute to this province, and sit inside my castle (that has a harbour of course), what would prevent me from lasting forever inside my castle, if the attacker does not want to storm the walls ?

I hear the attrition thing can't be done with this patch as it would require alteration to the AI...

...maybe something for the add-on?

I like the idea of getting supplies to the castle, but likewise that'll be an idea for an add-on i fear. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Ahh yes, I am absolutely sure of that.

Nevertheless, why not talk (or better write and read) about it ?

I am aware that most of us are fixed on the patch right now, but we should look a little bit further also, no ?

Who knows how long we will still have the attention of CA once they get back to coding, and maybe we can plant a subconcious sneaky little thought in their brains now for the time they make a meeting about the expansion .. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif
