I think that ran from East to West between the Nile and the Red Sea but it would have all but disappeared by the time of the crusades.

There has been some sort of a 'canal' for thousands of years, although for most of that time it was east-west and connected the Nile to the Red Sea. The modern canal was built by a French company which failed to find investors outside of France. The Crown saw it as an economic threat and incited revolts among the laborers. British investors were very skeptical that they would recoup their investment, probably because it was a French project :wink:. Nonetheless a few decades later Britain obtained a minority share in the canal before occupying Egypt.
