I'm referring to those situations where you have a general who is a pain in the butt-- and you need to 'get rid' of him. Maybe he's disloyal or has acquired a really nasty vice or you simply have a better guy for his job as Duke of Earl or whatever.

So... why send an assassin or strip him of his titles. Why not just disband the unit? Does anyone know of any seriously negative consequences of doing this? I'm very curious since I do this all the time and I'm wondering if there is some kind of major penalty that I'm overlooking.

I know that disbanded units can return as mercenaries-- are there any other issues with this kind of forced retirement?

Thanks.

You lose a good unit... that is the only other problem I think. And if it is garrison unit then you don't need to train a new unit.

Really bad generals should be disbanded, but if he has gotten happiness and Acumen penalties and still a great general, then I would strip him of titles. Just watch his Loyalty.

BTW, Danish Crusades are true to history.

GAH!

If you give him the pink slip, you no longer are obligated to pay his salary and medical benefits.

That is a nice bonus, in that it frees that money up to pay for somebody with a little more gratitude for the opportunity in life to die for their King...

GAH!

Use the idiot as a sparing parther for your assassins or inquisitors to increase their valour http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Wouldnt it be an interesting twist if disbanding units in a province had an effect on its loyalty?

make them happier? i mean who wants to see their husbands going off to war... i know my wife cried, complained, threatened to leave me etc. Before i went to the falklands... and then again before i went to the gulf.

Commanding general, I would simply remove him from combat role. If he has governing skill, then I might give him an office if there is one available. If not, I just keep him around in the King's army until I have an open position.

For governor and other titles, I would strip the title and return him to combat role if he is still valueable in that role (preferably, not in command). Otherwise, he's gone for good. I am not worry about him becoming mercs, because AI doesn't use mercs often.

Wondering what people's experience so far has been in disbanding and getting it back in form of enemy mercenaries.

Am at point in game as Germans where need to disband my urban militia/militia sergeant armys to a feudal maa/feudal sergeants one - sure can't pay for both.

Had to disband some feudal knights - too much maint cost - so far not burned.

not disbanding any good generals in all this
