... but I'm glad I didn't. Ever since I was excommunicated as the English for taking Brittany, the HRE & the Spanish kept kicking me in the stomach. The Spanish even attacked Wessex at one point. Finally I started pulling back my forces to Flanders & Normandy, leaving Brittany, Aquitaine, & Anjou completely undefended & destroying all improvements. Strangely, the Spanish didn't invade them, though they took Flanders.
I finally came to the conclusion that the HRE & Italians were troubling the Spanish & they didn't want to spread their forces. After three turns, I decided to assign governers to the abandoned provinces since I was still getting money from them but the previous lords had died in the countless battles (about three per turn for over 15 years). As I moved the new governors into their provinces, the Spanish were excommunicated. A couple of turns later, a Spanish princess arrived, wedding gown in tow, & I accepted the alliance. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif
Now I can begin to rebuild my treasury & repair the random collection of survivors I affectionately call my army. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
