my great imam has disappeared. (no jihad now alas!)where he stood, there is an heretic of the same name, but less piety.:furious3: this seems to confirm my worst fears. so heretics are spawned from standing priests, not spontaneous generation or special creation? does ths not mean more priests= more heretics? what 'bout witches?

I think heretics are randomly spawned by the game in regions with high heresy, and in addition your priests / imans have a chance of being turned into heretics each turn they are in a region with high heresy.

this chance is less the higher their piety, but I also have observed that it seems to be greater if they are alone and have no other ecclesiastical colleagues in the same region.

can anyone confirm?

They just spawn and priests go bad. You can have a safe 100% region one turn and the next it is 9 + % heretics. No region is ever totally safe. As to priests turning in to heretics so make less priests…that doesn’t work. Usually regions without priests is more likely to spawn heretics than those with them. All I can say is that you have to micro manage this to keep it from being a problem.

Priests going bad is the worse case as the convert that 9%+ when they do and by killing off heretics you can minimize the effect. Use any means to do this from a better priest to surround and squash…just do it.

In order to help ensure your Priests don't go over to the "Dark Side" of heresy, recruit them in regions with 100% or at least your highest religious rating provinces, with the most established churches and if possible a Theologians Guild. Those recruited there will have a higher chance of gaining the Orthodox traits which make them more resistant to going heretic. Leaving your clergy in those same regions may give them a chance to gain the trait over time as well but that might just be my imagination.

The game just spawns them. Also they are created from existing priests and Imams as we all know.

The following thread https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=95686 is one I did about a week or so ago. I got an education on herecy big time. My imams were automatically becoming heretics and my herecy % was skyrocketing. I actually thought it could of been a bug until I was corrected by the kind people who replied to thread.

Just thought it might give you a bit more insight to the whole thing :2thumbsup:

During one game as the Venitians, after a successful crusade to Jerusalem Egypt had retained 4 imams in my new province. And after about 5 turns they had all turned heretic. So egypt sent some more Imams in, and those started turning heretic too.

I felt for poor Egypt, you know, loosing all its holy men like that, so I sent in some priests and started denouncing them. Next thing I know, I have 6 cardinals elected on the council.

Since armies without captains tend to rebel and when they're led by a general they don't, would putting your holy men within your army prevent them from falling to heresy? If they do anyway, do they leave your stack or do you end up carrying him around like a parasite attached to your underbelly?

I think I saw the heretic remove itself from the army...
