View Full Version : Realism - Turkish names for Turkish Provinces
Merhaba, my fellow warmongers! (That's hello in Turkish)
As some of the regulars know, I'm playing the Turkish faction at the moment in my second run through the game. When I discovered we could rename our provinces, I, being a bit of a purist, I thought I'd rename my provinces to sound more Turkish/Middle Eastern.
So here I present the names for the provinces (which I've been able to find) :book: for the pleasure of similar purists or fans like myself:
Original (in-game) Name > Turkish/Middle Eastern Name
Iconium > Konya
Caesarea > Kayseri
Antioch > Antakya
Acre > Akka
Constantinople > Istanbul
Nicaea > Iznik
Smyrna > Izmir
Trebizond > Trabzon
Nicosia > Lefkosa
Edessa > Şanlıurfa or simply Urfa
Tblisi > Tiflis
Rhodes > Rodos
Cairo > Al-Qahirah or Masr
Alexandria > Al-Iskandariya (Arabic) or Eskendereyya (Egyptian Arabic)
Damascus > Dimashq or ash-Sham
Baghdad > Baġdād
Adana, Aleppo, Mosul and Yerevan have retained their names despite the march of countless centuries and innumerable conquerors... :2thumbsup:
Appreciate some feedback on the names, I'm sure they've changed over the years. What's more, what the Turks called them then may not be the same as what the Arabs call them now...

PS. Don't ask me anything else in Turkish please, I get by with Merhaba (hello), Gule-gule (goodbye), baclava (a dessert) and Sipahi (a Horse Archer unit). Incidentally, I believe most of the words used in M2TW are actually Arabic, not Turkish. For the sake of simplification and all, I suppose... :inquisitive:

Damascus > Şam or Sham(Either 'Dimashq' or 'ash-Sham' are Arabic, I think.)
Mosul > Musul
Adana > Adana
Aleppo > Halep

Incidentally, I believe most of the words used in M2TW are actually Arabic, not Turkish.
Unfortunately, that's true and their culture are implemented as Arabs. Not to mention some regions in Asia Minor(Anatolia) are seen as desert in the game.

Very good. I do the same as well. Got all my names off wiki. It's good of you to post so others don't have to search. I name Damascus in Arabic regardless of the campaign, just sounds cooler to me.
BTW the mod Xenophonia is looking for Arabic and Turkish voice actors to replace the commands in M2:TW. Check their home base at twcenter.net if interested.

Yes, I only found out about the existence of differences between the Turkish and Arab peoples/nations in university. And this is only because I met some Turkish students... Good thing I did too.
And such differences! Language, culture, customs! I had the chance to go on holiday to Turkey once a long time ago and enjoyed it a great deal. While I don't miss baklava (thanks again, Seyduna!) I find myself longing for a cup of hot apple tea... Sigh.
Anyway! Back to the game...
Now everytime I play I keep thinking that my troops should be addressing me as "Bey" or "Pasha". Not "Sayid"... :inquisitive:
I'm looking forward to Broken Crescent even more now! :laugh4:

Apple tea is great ! Unfortunately BC won't have voiceovers in Arabic or Turkish, they will use standard vanilla voices as far as I know. Xenophonia, however, uses all the different languages (French for France, German for HRE etc..) but they're having trouble finding voice actors for the 2 main Eastern languages in game.

The conquest of Istanbul doesnt have the same ring as the conquest of THE Constantinople, IMHO.

That's a good idea. Last I recall the BC mod leader said he's going to stick with vanilla. I did a quick test to see if I could do the Turkish commands, and I can, I guess. IIRC the BC team want the mod to be in English or the default installation language. They want the mod to be as friendly to all, without 'foreign' languages and names, avoided as far as possible.

Constantinople was called Istanbul much before the capture of the city by Mehmed The Conqueror.
The modern Turkish name İstanbul (IPA: or colloquial [ɨstanbul]) is attested (in a range of different variants) since the 10th century, at first in Armenian and Arabic and then in Turkish sources; it has been the common name for the city in normal speech in Turkish even since [I]before the conquest of 1453. It derives from the Greek phrase "εις την Πόλιν" or "στην Πόλη" [(i)stimboli(n)], both meaning "in the city" or "to the city".
That's not the point though, the point is to name the settlements you have the way you want to name them. Does'nt matter what you name them but if you want a purist Turkish empire naturally you'll name them in Turkish and that would mean naming Constantinople, Istanbul. An earlier screenshot from the same campaign (IIRC), note the capital. It has a Turkish name and also tells me what I supposed to be producing there. The name in this campaign is symbolic, Malazgirt.

This is where the Byzantines lost a major battle. Normally in a Turkish campaign I shift the capital to Antakya (Antioch):

My favourite spot was just below the Blue Mosque where they also had a delicious lentil soup.

Was rushing north from Kusadasi and Pamukkalae to catch a flight from Istanbul. Ah, yes, Turkiye!

sheesha is pretty trendy in london these days - I mean there were always sheesha bars in west london catering to the arab crowd, but now they are springing up in studenty areas like brick lane and such
also here in melbourne there was a "moroccan" themed nightclub opened up about a year ago where you can have a sheesha
I don't smoke anymore though, so I can't partake...
so anyway, turkish names for turkish provinces eh? great idea!

It's a GREAT way to hang out hence it's successful as a business. Sheesha, groovin music, nice cocktails, lounge decor... not to mention even catwalk models will try sheesha coz of it's chic & chill value!.
I name everything in Arabic if playing Egys. BUT now I'll evetually have to do the same playing Byzs, on a rampage to PWNBBQ the world with flamethrowers !

Sheesha's also become very popular in Que El (my little pun on KL).
You can get them almost everywhere now. There was even a little cafe (and am sure there loads of them around now) that called itself The Bazaar and served sheesha and coffee. No tables or chairs, just lounge around on carpets and huge pillows on the floor...
Renaming cities is fun. And realistic too. Cities in history have more than one name (sometimes several even) thanks to different cultures/languages/conquests/etc.

Until 1920, Istanbul was called Konstantiniyye which is derived from Constantinople. The name Istambol, which Sinan quoted, was used since 11th century. However, among the local people in Asia Minor the name Dersaadet, which means 'gate to happiness' in English, was much more frequent.
I prefer using Dersaadet over Istanbul, actually. ~:)
