View Full Version : Ethiopian Agema
I know this unit has been slated for removal by the EB team but i miss it so much I just had to ask. Is there a way to make it a recruitable unit again? I don't mean to sound rude or unappreciative of your work but its just that i miss tearing into the flanks and rears of enemies with them.:shame:

ah okay. they shouldnt have been taken out just since their eithipoian. but im no moder so i cant tell you if there's a way to bring them back but good luck on finding a way.. i want to play Saba and get some ethiopians :]
According to Marcus the EB team had them removed because historically they don't appear until late in the Ptolemaic dynasty as Cleopatra's bodyguards. I just want to find a way to implement them for myself. Well let me see what i can do without messing stuff up.

Making them recruitable mainly would be a (in principle) simple matter of adding the appropriate entries to the recruitement lists in the export_descr_buildings.txt, under the appropriate barracks.
...but given what kind of monster the EB recruitment system is (I took a look at the relevant sections once... "lemme tell you man, it was brutal!"), what with all those hidden resources and whatnots, yikes. Although I guess you could just copy-paste the hidden resource conditionals from the other Ethiopian units and change the unit name...

Actually I'm in the middle of big 1.0. EDB pervertion right now (see my signature for details) and I was not going to add those specifically cause EB-crew is adamant to dispose of them in 1.1 but if you need them I will add them till saturday.

Heres what Marcus told me
Yeah, the Aithiopikon Agema did exsist as Cleopatra's bodyguard, for example. And IIRC they were added to EB because someone found proof that they exsisted earlier (at the start date). But it turns out that that proof wasn't true and it was thus decided they would be removed from EB because they now lacked proof in this time period.
IIRC, because they still had some Makedonian elites available and they weren't on great terms with the locals (Egyptian and Nubian). Cleopatra was one of the first Ptolemai who actually reached out to the locals and got their acceptance.
Well, first of all, I'm just repeating what I heard internally. I personally don't have a relatively vast knowledge of Ptolemaic Egypt. M2TW does open the way for many new reforms and you may someday see some sort of reform for the Ptolemaioi.
The problem with leaving the unit it in some sort of delaying fashion is that it would open a huge doorway. For example, there are tons of things that were removed from Sweboz or could be added to Sweboz, but the only proof for them comes from Caesar's time. If the Eithiopians are allowed they should be too. Again, wait for EB2...
:Watchman: Your correct about the EB recruitment being a monster. I opened up the EDB and fainted. Thanks for the advice i'll try it
:CaesarAugustus: They made a reform for the Seleucids with Hellenic cataphracts.
:Minime: Thanks man! I don't want to look like i'm going against the EB team or anything its just i really love this unit! This isn't the first time Eb cut out a unit because of Historical Reasons. I still miss those 2 Handed Sweboz Axe Dudes.

i think from the way you talk you just want at least one type of soldier that charges at the enemy with a huge battle axe ready over his head to smash down on the enemy.. cleaving him in half, except the fact in the game you (sadly) can't cleave someone in half
It was just one of my favourite units.

Reform for one unit? :inquisitive:
The seleukids have that, for their kataphraktoi.
The seleukids have that, for their kataphraktoi.
The KH phalanx unit is also basically a reform unit (even though you don't get a fancy marker stating it)

KH phalanx depends on the vanilla marians...that would be a good way of making units like the Ehtiopian Agema appear only late in the game, if the pop growth was slower.
