no problem :beam:
If you want to buy a program PaintShopPro or Photoshop Elements are at the lower end of price range £80/$80 ish...
Or there is GIMP which is free.
http://gimp-win.sourceforge.net/stable.html
Any of those will open and edit tga's without additional plug-ins. Though if anyone else knows of way to get windows explorer to view tga thumbnails I'd be grateful!
TGA viewer (http://greggman.com/pages/thumbplug_tga.htm)
DDS viwer (http://download.nvidia.com/developer/NVTextureSuite/DDS_viewer.exe)

for that purpose Aradan I really like XnView (http://www.xnview.com/), wich allows you to browse your HD for any sort of image, view, rename, save in a different format, single file or batch ...
and the nicest of all, it doesnt need to be "installed" ...
you just unpack it and use it :)

TGA viewer fixed my basic problem (had found DDS one previously but not that), thanks :2thumbsup:
Other more comprehensive one is probably better but I'm too lazy to start other program so like being able to view from windows rather than browse....

Mak, you survived all this time without being able to view portraits and building images etc. in explorer? Sorry, would have told you had I known. I did put it up on the useful modding tools (somewhere) yonks ago...
thanks for the help, ill try some of the ones you mentioned makanyane. thanks again.
Ok, so i downloaded the gimp program, all im really trying to do is change the climate on the sicily campaign map. I change the rgb color but it doesnt seem to effect the game. It still snows in the winter. I've tried looking in some modding tutorials but I must be missing something. Once i figure this out hopefully ill be able to figure things out on my own, but a little guidance could be helpful.

did you delete the map.rwm file?
no i didnt, if i do that the changes i make will take effect.
Ok, i got the climate change to work. Thank you very much for all your help makanyane. I have one more question and hopefully it will be my last so as to not waste anymore of your time. Im trying to add a new province, to be more specific cut a province in half. The problem is when I open the file in gimp it shows a rectangle with black and grey tiles instead of the regions map. I'm sorry if these questions seem stupid, but i am stupid when it comes to this. I have never really tried modding the game more than changing text files. I'm trying to follow that guide to making a campaign map, but keep running into problems not mentioned.

make sure you are opening the right file map_regions.tga
its the right file, it says map_regions.tga, and I have the view on thumbnails so i can see the image for an icon. The image shows the map of sicily and the regions in different colors, but when i open it in the editor it shows the black and grey tiles instead of the image i see for a thumbnail.

ah that might be problem with whatever default GIMP setup is. In the window where the file is open look under 'dialogues' and select channels. In the channels window make sure you're not just viewing the alpha channel assuming it got saved with one..... (that tga doesn't need alpha anyway, but that's only thing I can think of that might be happening)
Once again makanyane you are right. I went to dialogues and enabled rgb, and i was able to actually see the map when i added the foreground or background color, but still only shows in shades of black white and grey. Without adding the back or foreground color i could only little circles which seemed to make an outline of the map or may have been settlements, not quite sure. This is really starting to frustrate me. I cant even get the image to show up properly, How am gonna ever expect to modify it so its playable. I'm so lost.

Ah, I don't really know what the problem is, but don't loose heart! Modding is a frustrating thing, but you learn from each frustration.
