View Full Version : Ladders
Is it possible to put a few sets of ladders on one point of wall (between towers)?
AFAIK with all siege equipment it's one deployment per span of wall only.

Not that i'm aware of. That would be good. - what you can do is but a unit like Princeps at the top of the ladder and knock them off with your shield

Ah, wouldn't it be grand if we could?
My archers cook all battering rams and most towers but those pesky ladder guys just keep coming until they are all dead. Somehow, I've always been able to kill them as they came over the parapet but it's been really close a few times when I was short of defenders.
If you can hit the guys carrying ladders with cavalry, you can cut them down to size but it may be a challenge getting cavalry close enough to do it. If you have artillery, you may be able to intimidate them a bit, but you will also damage your own wall as well as hit some of your own men. That is not good.
Having about 4 to 6 units of archers on the wall can pepper them reasonably well until they are coming up the ladder. Then you may want to withdraw the archers to behind the nearest tower while your heavy infantry block and destroy them.
I've tried destroying the ladders themselves, but thus far have not had any success at it.

In my two years of experience the AI seems mindlessly stupid with ladders. They often have a change of heart as to which section of wall they want to scale, resulting in some of the ladders getting stuck and the AI never being able to move them up against the wall. Meanwhile my cretan archers are gunning away like there's no tommorow:hmg:
Although the romans never seem to make this mistake, either this is the REAL reason they came to dominance, or Total War is tryna say something about us "barbarians" and our intelligence!

Yes, rams and siege towers can burn yet the invincible ladders will keep coming and once in place can never be removed.
I'm guessing the fact that you aren't able to push ladders away is because of how the defending side is going off easy, seriously, wouldn't it be easy for the defending side? Soldiers all climbing up the ladder and they keep dying, while the attacker's watchtowers and rams are being burnt.
