View Full Version : Annoying siege bug

Hi there. I'm fairly sure this was a bug RTW had without EB, but you guys might be able to point me to where I can get a fix for this (if there is one) anyway, so I'll just post the problem here.
Whenever I besiege a city with (I think) large stone walls and assault it with siege towers, quite often several of my siege towers will be completely useless when they get to the walls, as the unit is unable to enter them and gets stuck halfway in and halfway out of the entrance, just sort of milling around. This only happens with that level of siege tower too (the one that's completely closed in) and seems to happen fairly often, and to more than one tower at a time (eg, I just alt+f4ed out of my siege on athens because 3 of my 4 siege towers were nullufied by this)
Is there a fix for this at all? If not, any ideas how I could maybe get around it (eg, if there are avoidable parts of the wall that this always happens on etc)
Please don't suggest ladders, as I'm not a big fan of throwing my men away. :P
Cheers in advance.

I've had that bug with early versions of BI and RTW, but not the most recent 1.5/1.6 Eras pack version.

Dammit, just actually had a look for info on the bug and it *is* common. :(
Sounds like saving before the battle and reloading till you get it to work is the only solution.

It hits as frequently with 1.5 as anything.
A battlefield workaround that works sometimes is repeatedly (double-clicking madly) ordering your soldiers to run elsewhere and once they're out of the buggy loop order them to walk up the tower again. If ordering towards a certain location doesn't work, try another.
It doesn't work many of the times and the bug hits almost any time besieging a large stone walled city. That's why I use sap points assaulting them and build siege towers only to exploit their magic laser gun capability in case the enemy sallies.

That's what I do. Once the siege tower is placed and if they get stuck, just highlight the unit and click on the top of the wall, a few of them at a time will get unstuck and start climbing the tower. Repeat until the entire unit is up the tower.
The annoying thing is when this happens to the computer because the unit will sit there the entire battle. That's when you move phalanxes in and chop 'em up.

This is a problem I've had assaulting Syrakousai, too. It seems to only happen to large stone walls, though, because assaulting the ordinary stone walls of Roma didn't seem to cause any siege-tower distress. It took ten minutes to get my Gaesatae up the walls. It was a good thing I didn't place the tower anywhere within two towers of the enemy, so they didn't march over to see what the antics were all about.
Incidentally, another problem. When fighting the wall garrison with a friendly tower at my back, the tower fires into the fighting crowd and coincidentally does way more damage to my own troops than the enemy. It does not particularly help either when they are Gaesatae doing the assaulting... I was fighting a full-size unit of Poeni militia and they shouldn't even have killed more than 2 Gaesatae, but when I had finished with them I was reduced to 90 Gaesatae from a fullsize unit of 120. That tower (captured by me no less) did more damage to me than the entire garrison of the city did (3 gaesatae killed). It was ridiculous...

The bug is about the larger siege tower models built attacking large stone walls.
I suggest EB to remove large stone walls. They're meaningless and buggy.

:2thumbsup: Seconded. Actually less usefull in combat also. They look good on the campaign map and that is it.

GOD those towers are the devil!
When I'm attacking they seem riddiculously accurate and powerful, but when they're on my side they just go insane. The amount of elites Iv'e lost to those towers could build a land bridge between syria and cyprus:wall:
