In MTW it says unit have large shields... do these protect them from ranged fire or is just to add some armour ?

Is there a factor which decides the damage a unit receives only from melee (so ranged fire does normal damage, no mather how high the factor is)?

Shields add to armour and armour protects from arrows so yes.

The devs have said that shields protect from both missile and melee attacks, but are only added into the equation if the strike comes from the front.

Ok, to clear things up a bit:

Defense is used in melee. A high defense means the opponent has a low chance to kill you.

Armour is used against ranged fire. It does not factor into melee calculations (unless the opponent has armour piercing)

Now shields add to BOTH defense and armour. +2/+2 for a large shield and +1/+1 for a small shield or a cavalry shield.

Note however that some units have a 0.5 factor modifier to shield effectiveness.

Everybody wonders this but waits it out as it is perhaps not very important.

Well, here are the stats for the shields.

Large Shields: +2 to def and armour

Small and cavalry shields: +1 to each

Pavise Shields: +3 to Armour, none to def.

Though there are certain units with Large Shields that only have +1 to each (they have a 0.5 modifier): Almohad Urban Militia, Varangian Guard (they actually wear their shields on the back in combat, so it protects their back), Chivalric MAA (see other discussions about that)... The Hospitaller Foot Knights have a 0.0 modifier, so their shield contribute nothing.

So a unit with a defense of 1 million couldn't be hurt by melee attacks, does it still take damage from ranged fire ?

Ah, yes, forgot about the Pavise ...

... according to the devs the reason for the modifier is that apparently late units have so much armour that thry don't need shield anymore, which makes sense to some extent as upping both defense and armour is actually BETTER than the shield since shields become useless if you are flanked or hit from the back. Still the CMAA is an issue as he currently is a bit underpowered.

Actually Mithrandir there is a cut-off at 20 (difference between attack and defense) so a unit with a million defense is not much better than a unit with 30 defense.

But yes, that's right. Try it yourself. Edit the stats for one of the unit types and pin them against melee and archer troops with varying levels of defense and armour and you will see the difference.

In some sense the armour is already factored into the defense, that's why when you get an armour upgrade from buildings BOTH your armour and defense go up.
