Hi All,
I've got another novice-type question. This time about the location of Segesta.
Recently my Romani boys were besieging Segesta in NW Italy. While I was waiting for the action to start, I dipped into my battered copy of the 'Penguin Dictionary of Ancient History'. I looked up 'Segesta' and the book said it was in NW Sicily!
I'm no expert, and I guess it really doesn't matter, but I was just wondering what the definitive answer is regarding Segesta's location? Apologies if this is a dumb question but it just got me wondering . . .
Well I did some looking around. I looked at some maps i have on my computer and looked around online. The maps I found no cities called segesta in the northwest of Italy, and everything online talked about sicily. The area I looked in on the map was a region called liguria, and I saw no names resembling segesta, i looked at some cities near where it should be, its kinda hard to read all the letters but the ones i think closest to where it appears in the gamewould be genua, monilia, or apua, excuse my spelling its a little hard to read what it says.

Hi Telys,
Thanks for this reply. I also went online and found the same stuff as you, I think. And so I'm thinking that Segesta was in Sicily after all.
According to the Penguin Dicionary of Ancient History, Segesta was 'the chief city of the Elymi who with the Phoenicians retained possession of Western Sicily until the island passed under Roman control in the mid-3rd century BC.'
Rome Total War not historically accurate, this will never do?! :inquisitive:

Regarding the location of Segesta: I think I should have added in my original post that I'm playing the EB mod of RTW.
I guess it's not a big deal where Segesta is, but I just got curious and wanted to find out more about the place.
Meanwhile, my EB Romani campaign is progressing nicely. Excellent mod!

I bet you'll get more useful responses if you ask your question at the right place (https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=70). ~;)

Hi Mouzafphaerre,
Many thanks for your reply. As a new (and junior) member I thought I'd better confine my posts to the Entrance Hall, so as not to break any protocol. But if you think I should post this topic on the main forum then I can try.
Actually, I'd be interested to know what you think about the 'Segesta issue' - is it worth discussing? As I understand it, a new version of EB is in the works, so maybe this would be an opportunity to correct Segesta's location, if this is thought necessary.
Finally, I just thought I'd add that I have no knowledge or experience of modding (major respect to those guys), so all I can bring to the forum is historical stuff and general observations.
Once again, thanks for your reply - much appreciated.

Junior Members can post everywhere except in the Miscellaneous section, excluding the Watchtower. You can't post in the Arena, Monastery, Hard- and SoftWare, or the Tavern. You can post everywhere else.
The Segesta issue was already brought up, but the OP in that case had been quite rude, despite the multiple replies of the team.
As far as I know, and remember from that discussion, there is a Segesta both in Sicily and in Northern Italy. It happens that two towns have the same name. Ever looked up "Rome", on Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rome_%28disambiguation%29)?
Of course, you can ask over there, in the EB forums. They'll give a better answer than I.
I'll try to dig up that old thread in a few hours, so check this later.

You may post almost everywhere as a Junior Member and start threads in a bit fewer boards than you may post at. ~;p The Entrance Hall is basically for getting to know each other and serves as a general purpose board as well. But hosted mods' people generally have to restrict themselves to their respective boards due to understandable reasons (time constraints).
My EB geography isn't good enough to solve the riddle of Segesta. However, I'm %99 sure that there must be a Segesta right at that place in 272 BC because EB put it there. Historical (and otherwise, such as geographical) accuracy is the main reason of the mod's existence and the team has included several professionals and scholars on and off from the beginning. They're not immune to making mistakes but such a big one is less likely to slip in.
I say, you'd better start a thread and ask there.

Many thanks for the replies! This is helpful as it clears up the issue of where new members can post topics. Also, I'll check later to see if Warmaster Horus has posted the previous Segesta thread.
I can't really give a definitive answer to the Segesta issue. It just struck me as a possible anomaly, so I raised the topic. I guess it's totally possible that two towns once existed with that name.
Many thanks again for quick and helpful replies.

I'd have to agree with Caravel. Rome is inaccurate on the locations of several cities, including Segesta,Thermon,Pergamum,Thessalonica, and Sardis, among others.

We're talking about the mod Europa Barbarorum for RTW, which changes everything hair to toes. ~:)

Javolenus Priscus,
On the top left corner you see "Posting Rules". It will tell you what you can/'t do in a board, after you enter in.
Don't worry though. Once you're promoted to Member, all posting restrictions -except obvious ones, such as in archival boards, for everybody- will remove. ~;)

On XGM the settlement where Segesta is located is called Genoa... Thankyou.

True... But EB is more historically accurate than XGM (don't get me wrong, XGM is a fantastic mod. EB, though, is even more fantastic).
Haven't found that thread yet.

Hi There,
I've been nosing around the online map library of the university of Texas. I found a few maps relevant to the EB geography and period, and they have 'Segesta' as 'Genua' - the site of modern-day Genoa . . .

Well... City names can change over time. Look at where I live: Besançon. Before, it was called Vesontio. And try Paris. Lutecia, in the old days.
No luck for the thread, though. Sorry, I don't have time to search more.

Good point. My home town is York, which has been Eboracum, Eoforwic and Jorvik.
Meanwhile, I checked the ancient history of Genoa online to see if there was any mention of 'Segesta' as a name. I only looked on a few sites but couldn't find anything.
Maybe we need a history prof to clear this up?

Your best bet is to ask in the EB forums. They'll probably know more.
