For several months now I´ve come to the conclusion that I can determine who´s going to be the heir when my heir get to be king. How? Simple, check your familytree from the start. The current king is on row one, the heir and the rest of your characters is on row 2, right? The heir of the heir will always be the first one furthest to the left on row 3. Usually it´s one of the first ones you get in the beginning of the game.
This knowledge is useful because you can now groom him before he gets the new heir.

This is correct while your original family line rules. The oldest son is always on the left of the chart, and the oldest son inherits the crown.

But ones this family line fails to produce a heir, it is very hard to predict who will be next. Especially later in the game when you have developed family tree, with many different branches.
So far I haven't found any logical explanation how the game chooses the hair at that point.

Its absolutely random and there is no quick and easy solution without using the console and killing off the current heir manually.

Well I´ve had no problem following this well over 100 years into the game. You just have to remember who is promoting the appointment. But the main thing is that you can groom that carachter long before he actually becomes the heir.

It does not work sometimes for even the first few generations actually.
For instance playing Scotland, the initial heir had a son who came of age before the initial king died.
Interestingly enough, when the king died, his heir's son did not become heir, but the second youngest son of the king did.

I would choose the hair based upon fullness, texture, color, and scent. Preferably a blonde.

Unfortunately, the spell checker is not smart enough to detect that kind of error.
once I offered someone on this forum to buy him a bear...

That's quite all right though. The most egregious spelling errors are the ones where someone attacks someone else's spelling while committing errors of their own.

Example: "you miz spelt weltanschauung... hahahah wat a tard"

My most recent game as England:

William the Conquerer is the king at the start of the campaign. His heir is his oldest son, Prince Rufus. Over the course of the early game, Rufus adopts two men (early conquests) and then has two natural sons. At the time William dies, Rufus becomes king and the new heir is the first of Rufus' adopted children. The prince doesn't have any children for a while, so when Rufus dies his son is only 13. The prince becomes the king, but the new heir is now Rufus fourth child. It skipped over both the second adopted son and the oldest of the two natural sons.

I seem to remember trying to explain that heir is not pronounced like hair (to my roomate).

Me: "You see, hair is what is on your head. An heir is what rules your faction when you die."

Him: "I thought air is what you breathe."

Me: "SHUT UP!"
