I am sorry to post yet another thread due to the intrigue of a new campaign - however my Scottish quest failed, and I cannot type this on the Medieval: Total War computer for the same reason - a virus.

No matter, I began a new campaign in XL Early, and a new thread here, on a different computer - as the Principality of Novgorod.

I will try not to make this too similar to an AAR, and I intend to write such a report for the Novgorods if the campaign continues in the same light it has thus far.
But here I need your help with a passive crisis that blockades me.

I will set the scene briefly;
I conquered the neighbouring rebels in this order; Smolensk, Estonia, Livonia.
By this time, c. 1095, Finland was held by Norway, who conquered Sweden and Prussia.
Volga-Bulgaria held Moscow, later conquered by Kiev, who bordered me South-East.

A sudden war between an early superpower, Lithuania, and Norway, prompted me to take advantage and attack my southern neighbours.
However I was dissuaded by the size and might of the Kievan garrisons in Moscow and Chernigov, and so devoted myself instead to domestic development.

C. 1105, I had an army under crown Prince Mstislav I on the Novgorod-Lithuanian border.
On closer inspection of Scandinavia though, I found both Norway and Sweden completely submissive to the Lithuanian Grand Prince.
Fearful of the true extent of the Southern people, and doubtful of the remnants of my ally - I proposed a royal marriage to the Grand Prince, and led the Royal army into Finland.

By this time, I was allied with the Danes, who held from Saxony to Prussia as usual, I was strongly tied to the Kievan Principality, Lithuania was my ally true, and I also shared a comradery with England, Ireland, France and the Iberian Catholics.

I was, 'hemmed in', on all sides.
So I developed my provinces, not only in construction, but each garrison had a minimum of 700 men - recruited from my most upgraded, and most useful units.
I also had a fleet of 6 Longboats in the Baltic.

Mstislav I, god rest him, was the most influential ruler in the known world in c. 1120 ANNO DOMINI, thanks to a naval domination from the Baltic to the English channel, a large standing army in each province, strong alliances everywhere, an annual income of 1160, and his decision to support the Danes in their war against Lithuania.

With the south under our government, we allied with Poland, and all was at rest again.

O, dreaded peace.

For the Principality of Novgorod, it lasted 45 years, until Scotland re-emerged under King Aed I.
Though the rebellious armies were great, 3700 in number, too great even for all the garrison in Britain, Mstislav was careful to remain intelligent of all affairs in Northern Britain.

When after four years of fighting, King Aed was killed, and Scotland again was cast into madness, Mstislav I took 850 men, and expoliting his great naval power, landed in Scotland, taking it in a great battle between he and the degenerate Scots.

And then, after that battle in 1175 - PEACE, AGAIN!

Garrisons now consisted of usually:

2-3 Druzhina Infantry
3-5 Rus or Armoured Spearmen
2-3 Archers
4-6 Vikings
1-3 Boyars
1-2 Catapults

And still a profit of 1070 was made every year, which was used constantly in the cause of building and growth.
By c. 1185, I had placed at least 4 longboats in the Baltic Sea, Skaggerak, the North Sea, Northern and Southern Atlantic, Gibraltar, and the Tyrhhenean Sea.

Currently, 1206, (I was amazed by the sudden technical advantages!) I have been allied with the Danes, Kievans, Hungarians and English for over 80 years.
The borders, however, on all sides, are so heavily fortified, and have been for the length of our alliance - that it has been almost a cold war for the entire length.

Here is the most depressing part.
The Danes started crusading in c. 1135.
I cheated to see the status of the world and..
The Danes hold all of North Africa, the Middle East and Arabia, and two thirds of Anatolia.
They also defeated the Almoravid threat, (The Khalifate controlled from Morocco to Ile De France!), and now hold two-thirds of Iberia, half of France, and Wessex.
As well as Scandinavia and their homelands.
Oh, and they also didn't care for the Venetians constantly playing the Pope's Advocated, and took Corsica, Genoa, Venice, Tuscany, Sicily and Malta, allowing the Norman King to be exiled to Naples, and the Doge to Sardinia.

That's the Danish empire.

The Hungarian Empire controls from Lesser Poland to Greece and Nicaea, and from Moldavia to Bohemia and Croatia.

Meanwhile the French, exiled in Champagne, the Germans, exiled in Switzerland, and the Polish, exiled in Silesia, pray for assistance.

The English, though sharing in the Iberian Peninsula with the Danes, are subject to the Danish King in their own homelands, being allowed Mercia, Wales, Northumbria and from Flanders to Brittany only.

The Kievans, though they own twice the land as I do, share only half the income, and so I, by my might and wealth, keep them at bay only whilst I stagnate.

The Bohemian king Oldrich I begs my alliance and assistance against Danish incursions every year, and fights for his central, (and respectable), European kingdom - allying with the exiled Kings.

The world is under the siege of the Danish and Hungarian Empires, and I am akin to the strongest prisoner.
But I fear that if I strike in response to Bohemia's request, Kiev will turn on me, and they could easily crush me if I do not constantly flex the national muscle.

Tell me in-depth what you consider of this world my Principality survives in, and what I should do.

I had planned to stay faithful, as do the others, to my Viking overlords, and instead take Rhodes, Ireland, Cyprus and Crete with eventual naval expansion.
Or, what I also decided I could do, was create a slighter, more secure strength in all my border garrisons, and then using my 1000 florin income, suddenly create a large army and burst into Moscovy, then enduring the colossal counterattack, and the possible treachery of the Danes.

Oh, judgement, thou art fled to Danish beasts and men have lost their reason!

Shouldn't you just post this in the 'pics and history of your empire' thread and just pose a short but precise question here wether it be strategical, tactical or game related?

In short, your best option is probably to try an inspire a rebellion of some sort or other so you can captialise by taking the rebel held provinces. Inquisitors seem good at doing this, as does training a fleet of assassins. And going after a royal family.

Once a province is Rebel held, it's ripe for the taking. Dump an army into it and claim the province. eventually you're going to have to tangle with the Danes. If you have good defensive armies in your provinces that border with them you may be able to hold off the counter attacks. Trying to take a Citadel or Fortress without cannons is a big ask due to the Catapult towers.

A small force of an Organ Gun or two, plus some crack ground troops like Chivalric Footknights or Pikemen with good armour/weapon upgrades can cause huge headaches. small forces can also survice Sieges for long periods of time, giving you the opportunity to bring in a relief army. also think about stocking up on catapults for your Castle garrisons. at 10 men/unit you can have a few in there without depleting your food reserves too quickly and they can fire over the walls at the massed defenders.

Look at your allies, build up your border defenses then bite the bullet and pick an enemy. Either try and eat up a smaller neigbour or go straight for the Danes and hope others joing in with you. If you sit back you will inevitably lose.
