Excellent article by David Byrne on the current state and probable future of the music business. Recommended reading (http://www.wired.com/entertainment/music/magazine/16-01/ff_byrne?currentPage=all).

What is called the music business today, however, is not the business of producing music. At some point it became the business of selling CDs in plastic cases, and that business will soon be over. But that's not bad news for music, and it's certainly not bad news for musicians.

Not my corruption, they can make what they want to make and play wherever people like it. There is a huge market for independent artists.

That's hilarious. "Artists may make less on i-tunes"

The 800 pound gorilla is the record label. Get rid of them and you can afford to record your own music. If you aren't good at what you do, don't quit your day job.

Better artists will make more money, Bad artists will quit and go back to real work, and consumers will pay less for music. Problem solved.

TuffStuff, if you'd do us all the courtesy of RTFA, you would see that the role of labels is discussed in depth. Byrne actually breaks it down into six possible distribution models, all of which can live side-by-side.

I agree, however, that traditional music labels need to go the way of the Woolly Mammoth.

Right. Good ideas.

Funny. Was just listening to Lead Us Not Into Temptation.

Intriguing article anyway. Clearly not just a musical genius.

Follow Radiohead's example.

The only reason Radiohead could do what they did and still make money is because they have a large fan base who would pay no matter what. If a lesser known artist did that it really just wouldn't work because people would just abuse it.

That's what we're already forced to do with less known artists, you can't find their records in the shop, so you have no choice but to download.

Right. There is little long term future with music retailing.
