Is it just me, or do other people feel the speed in the real time battle is faster than shogun? I guess that is one way to make the game harder...
Well at least for me, it is too fast.

Also it is very hard to fight in the woods. Almost impossible to click on units.

The trees usually get in the way, so it can be hard. And Im not sure about the speed, it didnt seem any different? Maybe you have your speed slider up higher than normal.

Uhmm.. why do you not click the bottom flags?

And check the speed slider under the minimap window, maybe it is more than 0 %

Its slower.. not faster..... but clicking on units IS harder, Enemy units as well as your own... Is this because the valor flags are smaller than the honor flags of shogun?? Colors are another thing to get used too.....

Usually the 'alt' key is helpful for selecting those hard to reach units. :P

Its also great if you want to move a unit close to another one. Usually if you click it selects the other unit instead of moving the first one. With the 'alt' key, it gives you the move icon instead of the select unit one.

On another note, I like the speed of battles so far... It keeps you on your toes, but with good grouping and organization of your units its very manageable.

You can also pause a battle to get your bearings.

This is my first venture in this series - i have been playing games based on the sid meier engine (wnlb and austerlitz) and in these if you set time to slowest mode it is real time. first impressions of mtw are that even at slowest setting gamespeed is faster than normal time. or am i just overwhelmed by the newness of this system?

everything happens so quickly - how do you veterans keep track of what is going on?

battles seem to be over very quickly - admittedly i have yet to get beyond fight with numbers over 800 per side - but bannockburn lasted 4 and a half minutes!!

is there any way besides pausing that u can slow the game down more?

I find that using large unit sizes slows things down. The units take longer to manuever, and they take longer to die/route. I find I can do a lot more flanking and other tactical moves with the extra time larger-than-default units take resolving engagements.

In Shogun, I used 120. In this game only "medium" (+33%) so far.

Like someone said previously, you can pause the game to give updated orders (while paused.)

Sometimes, when I'm commanding an army of 16 units, right when the two armies are engaging, it feels like I'm pausing every 10 seconds or so to readjust formation, making sure the line is taut, reacting to cavalry strikes, etc. It's also invaluable if your army is so big, when the camera is on one end, you can't see the other, and need to know what going on on the other flank immediately.

Then it's fun to watch the replay in real time, since when you played it originally, time was all broken up http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Always play without pausing (well, when the phone rings.. sometimes), when pausing, I loose the feeling of being a Medieval commander and part of the excitement is lost.

here is a fact i've never seen mentioned also. in the tactical battles there is a way to advance the play frame by frame. hit the pause key and let it remain paused. then, click on any of your units on the field of play and the game will advance one frame. click again and it will advance one more frame. it's not all that useful, i suppose, but it does work.

There is a difference from STW in fighting in woods, if it affects you is another story. The trees are bigger and there are fewer of them, got this from the highest place. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I have found that clicking on units is indeed harder, and that the Valour-flags seems to be a little too small (hard to see at distance to gauge the Valour of enemies).

If your battle are spread out all over the map and want to go to the other end, just doubble click on the bottom flag of a unit that is in the other side of the battle field. Then drag the mouse and the camera will "teleport" to that unit.

The Green Knight:
After a while it wont be that hard to know what happens in the battle, I had to pause alot to when I played my first STW games.

"Always play without pausing (well, when the phone rings.. sometimes), when pausing, I loose the feeling of being a Medieval commander and part of the excitement is lost."

well I pause a lot : Medieval commanders didn't loose time clicking on their units, they just barked orders. So up until we get vocal reconnaissance and can ourselves bark orders at the computer (to the delight of of girlfriends) I'll keep using pause...
