Sorry if this has been posted before, but what's the actual impact of the choice one makes with respect to killing off rebels, etc.?

They don't seem to appear anywhere, regardless of what I choose. Just curious.

Killing all give you a +1 dread vice

Releasing all give you a +10 happiness vice.

Both only apply to your king. Don't overdo any of them, any vice can "grow", and the end is mostly bad ...

it has a huge impact on the region happiness and dread levels. I favour releasing them all and as a result have high levels of hap. Your king gets the virtue 'frequent mercy' quickly, which translate (from memory) into a +20 happ for the whole empire. This is something you might want in expert...

Happiness is generally worth more than dread for keeping your population in line, so releasing rebel prisoners is the better option.

However, once you have the 'frequent mercy' virtue, you should do 'execute all' at least once to get the 'swift justice' virtue which gives +1 dread. After that, just execute ringleaders.

Why think about it? Just kill 'em all. I like the "No Mercy" vice! You will fear me and my kingdom and we will destroy you muahahahaha!!!!

It's getting warm in here...that must be one hell of an INFERNO!

Inferno you get that Vice when you kill prisoners in battle, not when you kill rebels after a battle.

I thought it applied to the govenor too... I'm sure I have seen Rough Justice on one of my govenors.

maroule, you get a -1 to Dread when you get to Frequent Mercy. Not too bad if he is a rear-area govenor or a unit within an army.

I started releasing all the rebels in Portugal (they come back every fricking turn anyhow) and the rebellions seemed to lessen a bit.

Funny, I had three successiver rebillions in a province.

The first rebellion - I released them all.

The next turn, they rebelled with as many units and just as strong as the first time. I executed the ringleaders.

Third turn, they rebelled again. I executed all of them (third time's the charm). No more rebellions ever from that province - and the happy rating skyrocketed after I executed them all.

I think if you release them it increases the chance for rebellions to pop up again briefly. I've had next turn rebellions after releasing everyone in nearby provinces. It depends how you role play it, I'll release rebels from neutral provinces, but rebellious scum in my own empire will be slaughtered every time.

What about enslaving all of them? I haven't seen any difference between this and enslaving the ringleaders.

Enslave and Execute do the same thing. In the game that is.

I usually for every king do this.
1st rebellion: kill them all
2nd rebellion: release them
all other: kill ringleaders
when they rebel at just the wrong time i kill them all for the next few rebellions.

It's nice to have a good balance of dread and happiness.

And don't you guys agree, this is one of the parts of the game were you really miss the videos like in Shogun.

I used to execute anyone that breathed the wrong way. Now, especially in newly conquered provinces, I release all the rebels. The loyalty of that province will shoot sky high. Sounds better to me.

Loyalists, on the other hand *looks for a sturdy tree* deserve much better treatment.

That is what I do too. Release the rebels who you have just conquered, then kill them the next time, and if they rebel again and the govenor is not a general I release them again. If he is I only kill the ringleaders.

They come back every turn anyhow in the worse provinces, might as well release them.

Just so I understand this, which I don't:

1. During a battle, you sometimes get prisoners. The only option is to kill them (during the fight), otherwise they just hang out until the fight is over and your General sells them. Right?

2. After taking a country you will have people to either enslave or release. Commoners and Nobels I think. If you enslave them, the people there get ticked off at you and happiness goes down? If you release them, they come back next turn but the people are a little more happy with you?

I've been enslaving everyone, so I guess I'm screwing up? Something like never leave your enemy alive behind you, forget how it goes.
