Hello dear friends!

I was scaning some old notebooks I'm about to throw in the garbage.

while doin that I found this really(kinda) old comic strip i had forgotten all about. I made it after I had read one of does roman over/under-powered-threads on this board :clown:

I added the text the way I believe it was supposed to be. I just thought I would share it to you guys... :P its nothing special. :P

Its about a roman officer reading the eb-boards...
http://static.pici.se/pictures/twiGMiRnP.jpg

thanks to all the great feedback I made another one. :P (and got on more in the works) :)

its not as funny as the first one (its hard begin funny on demand). its inspired by Alexandros Maximus, but with my own twist

anyway.. its about two gaulic merchants trying to make a living down south...

No, it is not true. Rome did not invent the genocide. It doesn't take a historian to realize that there was plenty death before the Romans came along. There was plenty of genocide to go around all over the world well before Rome entered the picture. Just because they are better at killing than those they conquered does not make them somehow worse. This kind of thinking is void of logic.

You owe the Romans more than you know. They invented many things which we could not do without today. More importantly, they took the technology and inventions of other peoples and improved upon them, spreading them across the world.

Forgive me for being a party pooper. You are a very good cartoonist and I love your style as well. I only ask that you do a bit more research before dishing out insults.

It's just a cartoon and the things he mentioned were not invented by the Romans (on concrete I'm not 100% sure)

You're right they did not invent killing but they did take slaughter to another level. The Celts could have "exterminated" Roma but they accepted gold. Hannibal ultimately wanted peace with Rome and didn't press forward. And with or without Rome those inventions we owe them would have been invented by someone else probably. Carthage had sewage, pipes and apartment flats before Rome btw

The Romans exterminated a great deal of the population of Gaul (an approximated 1 million dead) and Epeiros and other places (like Dacia where Trajan's doctor says there were only 4 people left alive... an exaggeration for sure ). On Trajan's column it's not the Dacians being barbaric but it's the Romans killing women and children and carrying heads in their mouths.

I really didn't want this thread to turn into this but this defence of Rome's greatness even on a topic on comics kinda pushed it over the top...

I don't have anything personal with the Romans and they were a great part of the history of our world and they deserve their place but the other people who did invent things the Romans adopted (and improved most likely) deserve a fair treatment too.

Lovejoy keep it up I'd love to see a series...

If you are expecting a bag of uneducated nincompoops to read these comics than you are in the wrong place. Unfortunately for the ill-informed, this forum is chock-full of historians and history enthusiasts. To address the last clause: I am NOT "defending Rome's greatness," I am merely trying to set the record strait.

I don't have anything personal with the Romans and they were a great part of the history of our world and they deserve their place but the other people who did invent things the Romans adopted (and improved most likely) deserve a fair treatment too.
Indeed, that's how EB began is it not? I don't ask for OMFGWTF*&^*^%&@*%$&ROMANPWNAGE!!!!1111. I ask for the truth, and I hope that isn't too much.

You're right they did not invent killing but they did take slaughter to another level. The Celts could have "exterminated" Roma but they accepted gold. Hannibal ultimately wanted peace with Rome and didn't press forward.
You're taking a few examples from history (partly false ones at that) to try and disprove a massive point. There are plenty, PLENTY examples of barbarism outside of Rome. Heck, before the Romans annexed Gaul human sacrifice (which involved putting people inside a cage and burning them to death) was a common practice amongst the druids. Celts were doing to themselves the exact same thing Caesar did. And do you believe Hannibal was a nice guy? Do you think kindness and mercy was even the smallest of factors in his decision not to besiege or assault Rome? That's simply poor history. I could name numerous nations which showed far more barbarism and far less magnanimity and grace than Rome.

If you’re asking if Rome conquered by singing “We are Family!” then the answer is no. They conquered through conquest, like everyone else.

The Romans exterminated a great deal of the population of Gaul (an approximated 1 million dead) and Epeiros and other places (like Dacia where Trajan's doctor says there were only 4 people left alive... an exaggeration for sure ). Do you think any other nation would have not done the same thing were they as skilled at war as the Romans? They are only doing what conquerors did. Am I saying Rome was a peaceful or moral nation? By no means! I only ask for a fair outlook on history. For as long as humans have fought, humans have committed atrocities. The Romans were no worse than the Spanish Conquistadors, German Nazis, Russian Communists, Chinese Communists, Catholic Crusaders, modern Islamic Jihadists, ancient Assyrians, Greek polis, and so on and so forth. Why such attention is paid to the bad things the Romans did is simply unfair. Claiming Rome is the inventor or worst committer of genocide is simply ridiculous.

And no Rome did not invent concrete. Her version of the stuff was simply superior than that of everyone else.

Humor is a very powerful tool. I've read many cruel and cold "jokes" which chilled me to the core with their sick sense of humor and false claims. Not to say that this funny comic is one of those (I must admit I chuckled when I read it).

What record, they did not invent those things and by genocide I mean the organized not spontaneous mass killing.

Indeed, that's how EB began is it not? I don't ask for OMFGWTF*&^*^%&@*%$&ROMANPWNAGE!!!!1111. I ask for the truth, and I hope that isn't too much.

I know about the use of the wicker man for sacrifice it may or may not be true but they did not do this regularly there is no evidence (of the wicker man) besides JC's account. The Romans practiced human sacrifice too like before campaigns (a Greek and Celtic couple were buried alive before a campaign... could've been in one of the Punic wars don't remember exactly)

What I'm talking about is mindset. Cynoscephalae turned into a Mak slaughter because when the phalanx broke the Maks were used to be given mercy, such were the customs of Greek warfare but the Romans cut them down. The Greeks almost never razed a warring enemy city-state.

Give me those examples of comparable or worse killing of large number of people before the Romans and I'll retract my statements. You could make a case for the Assyrians perhaps but I don't think they ever reached Rome's numbers.

Do you think any other nation would have not done the same thing were they as skilled at war as the Romans? They are only doing what conquerors did. Am I saying Rome was a peaceful or moral nation? This indeed has no clear answer and is an endless debates, modern comparisons are not appropriate. But in the ancient world they raised it to a state policy and they were the first to do so and that is important. Like you said we owe them a whole lot, maybe we owe them the stupid idea that genocide does work and can get you somewhere too...

Its because they get such a ridiculous amount of attention on all the bad things they ever done the roman officer "gets it wrong". thats why I said he is reading the eb-boards(because thats one off does places the romans get alot of shit on) (dont feel offended anyone)

I even said I wrote this story after reading one of does hate/love-roman-threads! :P

do i make any sense at all?

the joke (in a way) is thats its silly, but you can understand his confusion because of all the hate roman things. :beam:  we all know the romans didnt "event" "genocide" and that they did invent other stuff, (well... im sure they did :P :D :P) but we can all say: hey thats true! thats what we are told! but we all know its silly! and thats funny!!!

@Red:
In order to best respond to what you said, I think it may be best for me to point out that genocides, one can surmise, may be as old as civilization itself.

In Homer's Iliad, the Greek forces invading Troy have no qualms about planning the total destruction of its people. In Book IV, Agamemnon rouses Menelaus:

My dear Menelaus, why are you so chary of taking men's lives? Did the Trojans treat you as handsomely as that when they stayed in your house? No; we are not going to leave a single one of them alive, down to the babies in their mothers' wombs—not even they must live. The whole people must be wiped out of existence, and none be let to think of...

And so it goes on. Homer’s epics are older than written history itself, they took place before the events recorded by Herodotus, the father of history. Genocide is not something new.

It is as old as the Old Testament of the Bible.

“And they utterly destroyed all that was in the city, both man and woman, young and old, and ox, and sheep, and ass, with the edge of the sword.” Joshua 6:21
“So Joshua smote all the country of the hills, and of the south, and of the vale, and of the springs, and all their kings: he left none remaining, but utterly destroyed all that breathed, as the Lord God of Israel commanded. And Joshua smote them from Kadesh-barnea even unto Gaza, and all the country of Goshen, even unto Gibeon.” Joshua 10:40-41

--King James Version.

This isn’t the only instance of genocide in the Old Testament.

I would also like to refresh your memory of the atrocities committed by Athens during the Peloponnesian War, when they massacred the men of Milos and sold the woman and children into slavery simply because they wished to remain neutral. I’m sure you’ve also heard of Sparta’s infanticide.

Also, Child sacrifice was prevalent in Carthage, a fact confirmed by archaeological evidence.

There are also many instances of genocide in the middle ages, Genghis Khan foremost among them, but I will stop here having made my point. These events are only the tip of the iceberg.

p.s. I don't have a "fetish" for Romans, I do have a "fetish" for the truth.

And for some absurd reason it appears as many people on this forum have an intense antipathy for Romans. Lovejoy does not. I only jumped here because this phenomenon has become so common lately on this forum that I inferred this to be another instance of it.
