View Full Version : Do you usually play : \"early\" or \"late\" middle ages campaigns ?
Just curious...
Do you usually play your campaigns with the
"early" or "late" middle ages settings ?
I have started my first campaign with "early" settings, and, IMO, 80% of battles are basic units vs basic units ... should try with the "late" thing ... mmm???

I found the same thing so I tried "late" but I have to say my current "high" campaign has been the most enjoyable to date. This is when the Mongols turn up.
It took me nearly three weeks to come very close to the end of the first campaign set early period. The early period definitely fun to play. Fighting with the basic troops is somewhat more challenging in the tactical aspect. Later in the campaign, the battles are usually huge, long and not so enteresting (two equally match army, shoot out, or may be I am not so creative in tactical battle).

I suppose that if I chose "late" or "high" (?) I will have more units available, no?
(powerful units I mean) and will start with a castle at least (longbowmen ... hehehe)
and sieging castles should be more interesting than just destroying a wooden door with peasants ... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/wink.gif

I prefer Early campaigns. More time to kill, pillage, and conquer. In Late campaigns, I feel that the game is over when it's getting interesting.
BTW, is there any way to edit the game to make it longer? 1453 is just too soon to end the fun http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

I always play the Early era. I've tried the others but the lack of time is hard along with the fact that if i played early by the time it was 1205/1320 my tech would be much better than the way it is.
To counter the crappy units in the beginning I use my own mod. It's available already.
And some people have made the game longer by setting the start to an earlier date, I think the earliest was 16A.D.
Check out the modpatch etc forum for info on any of those mods.

My only campaigns were Early, but almost all multiplayer and custom battles are High.

Early - more time to develop, more empire-building and even role-playing if one likes it that way (I do). Plus no gunpowder units early on (I HATE gunpowder units...)

I already have downloaded it and I guess I'll be giving it a shot in the next few days (many, many days, judging by what you said).
Actually, are all factions (even the minor-est ones) playable in terms of gameplay? Except papacy which is something Barocca points out anyway.
GAH!
If you could play as the Pope, would you be able to launch a Crusade?
GAH!
And would the Papacy grant you 1000 florins for assisting Christendom? http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/eek.gif

Sounds like the perfect thing for the expansion...
Cover the NEXT 400 (well... 300) years, add some nifty diplomatic options, etc.
New tech, new troop types, etc. etc.

I like starting Early, just because it seems everyone starts on the same footing, and it's easier for me to keep up or surpass other factions technologically as the game goes on. Same goes for the structures.
I dislike starting on high just because I know what buildings work best for me, and prefer to make them rather than start with a bunch of fluff and become outclassed by the enemy because the designers favored one province over another in the setup.
I always start in the early period, 'couse i enjoy building my own damn empire from scratch!

16 A.D.? The Romans are still at the height of their power!
Speaking of the Romans, for those not frequenting the History side of the forums, there's a bunch of guys trying to get together for a Roman mod. I hope they can pull it off...
