Since I'm too idle to go out of my way to find any more, has anyone come across any other passing nods to comedy other than the League of Gentlemen reference - ...a local shop selling local goods to local people..." - and Monty Python - the two Inquisition guys stood in the doorway have got to be Michael Palin and Terry Jones in the "No-one expects the Spanish Inquisition" sketch.

I noticed the Spanish Inquisition, though I I recall the guy in the background looking more like Terry Gilliam.

I'll have to start looking a little closer at the game info now - a fun little game to play within a great game. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif

Yeah, I noticed those Inquisitors do look like Monty Python.

Though I don't understand the other one, the one about the shop.

Kraxis.
"The League of Gentlemen" is a comedy serial which has been on British TV over the last 4-5 years or so, set in the surreal town of Royston Vasey. Don't know if it's made it out of this country yet. The local shop is in fact nowhere near the town but in the middle of nowhere. Hapless passers-by, usually lost, are refused service and told " Are you local? This is a local shop for local people. There's nothing for you here."

Hence the reference on the merchant info screen.

You've got to be there, really!

Gregoshi.

I think Terry Jones was the rather jowly looking one, as in the pic. Terry Gilliam was the American who did all the cartoons though he may have occasionally appeared.

Terry Jones was the one who did all the really convincing female impersonations.

Brian's Mum is the obvious one that springs to mind.

League of Gentlemen was on Comedy Central in the USA for about 3-4 weeks in ... summer of 2000, I think. I thought it was really hilarious, but I guess not too many other people did...

New Glorious Achievement: build a shrubbery (improved farmland V - 100%)

Terrys Jones and Gilliam were in the Spanish Inquisition according to Monty Python. The two members of the Spanish Inquisition were 1) Jones as "Cardinal Biggles" (with the leather aviation helmet), 2) Gilliam as "Cardinal Fang" (the weird one), and 3) Michael Palin as...the THREE members of the Spanish Inquisition were... http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

Bring on the comfy chairs.

Been looking for special agent Sir Philip Sibley and his busting of the Spanish porn ring.

He may more properly belong in a different idiom though http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif .
