okay so I've seen the various soldier/general and equipment/weapons rendered images, but now have to ask: what part do they play in the game?

I'm not sure which rendered images you mean. In which directory / where in the game do they appear?

Purely guesswork here as I haven't seen the renders you're referring to, but the in-game units look as though they were rendered in 3d before being turned into 2d sprites.
