Do the mongols - timurids have a set objective or do they simply wander round the world until their numbers dimish through countless battles.

The current mongols headed towards i think kiev ransacked it and left . it went rebel so they returned and repeated, and left and repeated. Rather than fight them I carried out a tactical retreat to Bran and the ajoining bridges and have been left alone although technically at war. It seems there is no interest in attacking any other AI faction and as i am not nearby i am left alone. The tirimids seem to be following the same pattern. They have marched past the turkish settlements of Bagdad and ajoining regions and headed straight towards Antioch. The pope camped out in damascus has been left alone so i allowed Antioch to rebel, well the pop was getting to large and thus with a rebel town they stopped. They must be getting sunburnt by now as they have nt moved in turns. My forces remain in cyprus which they cannot attack without a navy and in Egypt which will take too long to get there. As with the mongols they disintergrate and can be picked off. Interestly they seem to be aquiring loads of negetive traits which i thought you could only get being in a settlement.

Those traits are acquired because of faulty code and checks in the VnV files. They don't check whether the character is actually inside the settlement when giving them, which causes this problem. I went through and fixed all those (signature).

Anyway, shamless ad aside, it seems that indeed they never seem to go around in a targeted manner like the real mongols did. I think the best they ever did was take Antioch and Jerusalem and then become docile. Otherwise they just wander around aimlessly in the MidEast. If they spawn at Sarkel, they usually sack that and then end up stalling between Sarkel and Caffa, standing around doing absolutely nothing.

Never seen them become a large empire or leave a track of wasteland in their wake. Disappointing really.
None of the AI fixes out there really takes care of it either, including Ultimate AI (which personally I didn't find too useful. You can achieve the same by doing simpler fixes)

I've always been rather amazed when I see people's game with the Mongols or Timurids well established empires as well. It seems like I have to go and hunt them down to get a fight out of them, otherwise they wander in the valleys and steppes until they die off. In my AAR they made it to Kiev, but only because I had to conquer my way through all of Turkey to find and attack them, and they never took another province.

On that note, however, I frequently seem to trip the Uber-Pope as my games often feature a 10-15 province Papacy. Quite funny really.

I've never seen the Mongols or Timurids amount to anything, either. If I own one of their targets (Kiev, Antioch, etc.) they'll make a beeline for it, ignoring poorly guarded settlements along the way. If I'm far from the eastern end of the map, they do nothing but wander aimlessly.

I wonder if I took Antioch, etc. and purposely let the Mongols take them when they invaded, would they build an empire? Or at least take a few provinces?

In my English Campaign which I completed not so long ago (and still come back to every now and then just for fun). The Mongols Invaded and wiped the Egyptians off the map and Renedered the Turks useless. They took Every where East and South of Antioch which gave them a handsome 10 (aprox) provinces. I went through and cleaned them out from province to province until now where they only have Cairo, Dongola and Baghdad left.

However on the other hand, the Timurids turned up below Baghdad during all of this and actually to begin with, the Timurids attacked Mongolian Stacks! And it actually looked like they may start settling in, when suddenly they headed for the desert and have stayed in a massive clump of stacks ever since.

My guess is, that there are certain triggers that determine whether these factions are going roam or conquer. It just seems the AI gets confused so it leaves them as useless chess peices in the middle of the board. :wall:

What do you mean by AAR?

'After Action Report' which is just another way of saying a story I wrote around my Danish campaign. It's linked via my sig, below. :beam:

In most of my campaigns the Mongols settled down and created a decent empire. On the other hand, I've never seen Timurids doing the same, mostly because they usually appeared near my borders and I wiped them out ~D .
In my current HRE campaign, the Timurids are heading towards the Antioch (which is under my rule), and they'll probably settle there because I do not have the power to stop them.

Here's a few examples from my Turkish, HRE and English campaigns:

I have rarely seen the Mongols, and never the Timurids. I am trying to play a turtle campaign right now so I can actually see them. I usually get bored with a campaign and the slow process of micromanaging so many settlements before they arrive, and I start a new one. Short attention span, I know. Anyway, the few times I have seen the Mongols, they seem to bypass any rebel regions and attack only faction-controlled regions. I'm wondering if I just imagined this or if anyone else has noticed.

The usual behavior of the Mongols while in horde is to sack a settlement and leave it to rebel. Therefore it's hard to see if they attack rebel settlement unless you constantly monitor what they are doing.

Once they settle, they capture both faction-controled and rebel settlements.

Change the event dates. No need to turtle overly.
