why in multi-player is it necessary to have one person defending, why not have to opposing sides engaging in a fluid battle, i.e. both are attacking?
also whats a good ratio of florins between the attacker and defender? currently using 6000/4500, but it still seems a bit squewed to the defender!
cheers for any help
Its not necessary for one person to defend. Attack/defend is just a way of differentiating the two opposing sides. Call them team A/B if you like.
Of cos, with attack/defend somewhat gives the defender the moral right to 'camp', and the attack moral obligation to advance.
But what is defend in MP? To me, its when one uses less florin than the opponent. And it can be the 'attacker' for that matter. Less florins means either quality/quantity inferior army compared to opponent, thus forcing one to act defensively in battle.

On even map, use equal florins, unless you are in for a challenge, or giving handicaps to someone less able.

Sometimes defenders make the mistake of being 'static' so if their ally is being killed, they don't move - they're defenders! So if I outmanouver them they don't move - they're defending!

Yeah, I noticed that in a 2v1 (my ally dropped).
I was routing one, right past the 'defender', did he come out and help him? NO! He sent two units of knights which I was easily able to stop with my spears.
He stayed put the whole game, even when I said I had done my amount of attacking (had attacked him as well), he just complained I was too hard to kill (if he had been more aggressive it would not have been very hard). To finish the game I had to to charge him head one, I was bored of waiting.

Cheers people, i'm a bit of a novice to the Total War games. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif I've never played the Shogun games, and only got M-TW a couple of days ago. I also don't have a net connection, what i do have is my PC networked to a mates.
I ask about the Attack/Defend due to the Time restriction the attacker must stay within or suffer a default loss. Am i reading this right?
I have tried when hosting a game putting both me and my mate in the Attacker box, but the computer never registers us a ready, and just sits there with the message, "waiting for players to join"!
Also is it possible to play an MP game that also has some AI players?
cheers for any help
If its just the two of you... you cannot be both in the same box! There must be players in BOTH boxes! With TWO pcs connected all by themselves, the MOST you can have is TWO players: one defender and one attacker.
Easy.
And, you can setup game with no timer I think... At least, you could in Olde Shoggy...
GAH!
Oh, and MP games -- ALL HUMAN, NO AI.
GAH!

Ideally you should always play the aggregate of two games. In the second game the attacker and defender switch sides and the results calculated from both battles.

just a quick point i'd like to confirm. http://www.totalwar.org/ubb/smile.gif
is there any morale/valour bonus from being on the defending side, (irrespective of whether you defend or not), in a 2 player MP match?
just asking to see if it makes any difference whether you select your team into the attack or defend box.
cheers for any help

No difference in the morale system that I know of.
Gil ~ CA
There is a slight morale bonus for having a height advantage. Since the defender chooses the ground, he can get a morale advantage if there is high ground on which he can deploy.
